Im interested too. Im still chasing leaks.
But.. leaks ive found (not from cowl area.. thats another story)
major leaks:
steering column
firewall pass through for fuse box
(also want to keep up with this thread.)
Heated the bolt (maybe heating nut would work?) to just about red hot.
Waited for it to cool down.
Broke loose very easily.
I tried penetrating oil for weeks. breaker bar + jack handle and got no where
I recommend doing the front bolts first then moving to rear.

opps thanks RCP
For cowl cover and inside cowl draining, using those thin plastic painter's trays. Cut to fit.
durable, cheap, easy to cut and mold with a little heat.
RPC thanks !
Cowl is not removal. part of the body. Drains seem to be inside the body cavities.
Attempting..
Drap a plastic or aluminum sheet so all the water drains to passenger side.
Plastic will need to be heavy gauge or need to be tightly held in place.

Here is video how to replace MAP (in a 96 xj ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zK61aak2wk
Instead of replacing, spray with Mass Airflow Sensor cleaner.
Do not use other cleaners because they will leave residuals that will foul the sensor.
takes 15 mins -rockauto has cleaner for $3.55...
Funny my 96 was in a field for about 8 years.
TPS needed to be replaced (it had an error code)
It barely started.
guessing you have cleaned the throttle body.
this MIGHT HELP -->
Horrible single digit gas mileage and no error code. (Running super rich.)
MAP sensor was dirty. cleaned with...
Shot(s) in the dark,
*check new water pump specs.
make sure its not reverse flow.
OR
T stat not opening.
I might also remove the t stat and see how she runs without it.
Before tearing into the engine, there are (chem) tests for checking if exhaust gases are getting mixed with...
no aftermarket add ons.
no trouble codes (per autozone)
unplugged the servo and cruise stayed on (brake switch connected).
going to attempt to test servo with multimeter.
starting to suspect a bad connection to servo.
It was unconnected for +15 years.
tried cleaning but not satisfied with...
unplugged the brake switch and cruise will stay on
but it wont set.
checked the continuity of the switch
seems to be working correctly.
plunger in.. cruise gets power (and brake lights off).
manually depressed plunger to max and cruise doesnt stay on.

1996 cherokee 4.0 5 speed
Retrofitted cruise control.
Followed all the directions.

All 1996 components
No vaccum leaks.
Correct clock spring/switches.

Turn cruise control to "On" light stays lit for 10 seconds
and shuts off.

more info for you..
have an old steering box laying around -unconnected power steering lines.
(she leaked alot at the seals and bearings were quite worn and never adjusted the tightening nut.)
I can apply maybe 20-30lbs of effort to rotate it via the pit arm.
IMHO. I'd take everything...
Is it running rich?
Symptoms occur slowly or all at once? After new parts? anymore info?
Similar issue... no cel. ran rough. horrible mileage and horrible performance. MAP sensor was dirty. ~$10-15 for MAP sensor spray. (using infamous k&n air filter.)
another idea...

PB'ed the bolts everyday for a week..
got no love..
add heat they all moved pretty easily.
Completely did one side,
then moved to other.
Alignment wasn't an issue.
Might want to check inside engine compartment.
Passenger side fire wall, the HVAC (big round) intake is about 1/4" up from wheel fender.
1/4" can easily get filled with dirt/grim.
I had pine needles pointing directing water straight into the intake.
That's all it really took.
Used seam...
