Can anyone recommend a shop in San Antonio?

I need some suspension and brake work done on my 98 Cherokee. I find myself strapped for time and was considering having some of the work done. Can anyone recommend a shop or wrencher in San Antonio that does good work at a reasonable price? Please move this thread if I am posting in the...

"Gurgling/bubbling" sound coming from fuel tank?

Plastic balls indeed. If I remember correctly, the TSB mentioned the fix was to add or reposition a spring against a float ball of some sort inside the tank. Sorry I can't be more specific, but it was over a year since I read the TSB and I don't have access to it any longer. -Chuck

"Gurgling/bubbling" sound coming from fuel tank?

My 98 does it too. I researched it once and found a TSB describing the problem and fix, but decided not to bother with it unless I need to drop the tank for some other reason. -Chuck

    Front Brake Thump

"brakeshoe tab hitting the top ledge"...the two notches at the end of each brake pad should be riding along the edge of your steering knuckle. There shouldn't be too much play there unless you've worn a significant grove in the knuckle. One mm sounds okay though I'd think. -Chuck

    Key won't unlock cargo hatch

Thanks for the replies. I wanted to make sure the newer XJs didn't have some kind of master key deal going where only the master key will open the doors and the trunk. Penetraing oil sounds like an easy first step with removing hatch for a look as a follow on step. The cargo lamp switch has a...

    Key won't unlock cargo hatch

Electric door locks work fine, but cargo hatch won't open with key? Cargo hatch dome light comes on when doors open, but not when cargo hatch alone is open. Is there a hatch sensor? 98XJ -Chuck

    Noise from Steering Column

I bought a used 98 XJ this past spring. Mine started doing the same thing a few weeks ago. Gonna try the grease. Hope it works as it is annoying as hell. -Chuck

Few questions on changing out steering knuckle

This was a used one. I was using "new" to distinguish between the old one I was taking off. I have the pads and caliper bolts in my car now and will definitely test the next one! I looked at the slide surfaces and caliper threads for wear, but never thought to measure the space between the...

Few questions on changing out steering knuckle

I knew things were going too smoothly! Tried to put the caliper and pads back on and the outboard pad won't fit in between the slides of the knuckle. The inboard pad fits but won't slide far before it wedges in the slides. The upper slide looks like it is bent downward about 1/8 inch. That...

Few questions on changing out steering knuckle

Well, I pulled the axle shaft and swapped out the knuckle before the sky opened up on me and I had to stop til the rain quits. The hub bearing assembly pulled free with a few tugs. I hit it and bolts with some PB Blaster yesterday. Axle tube is clean, oil seal still in place, and axle shaft...

Few questions on changing out steering knuckle

Should I drain the differential before removing the axle shaft or does the oil sit low enough in the differential to keep it from spilling into the axle tube? I've already taken a wire brush and brake cleaner to the used knuckle and I will be sure to do the same to the hub bearing assembly as...

Few questions on changing out steering knuckle

Rounded up the right sockets, but haven't started the job yet. I'm a little unsure about the axle shaft. Does the inboard side of the axle shaft go all the way to the dana 30 differential or is there an intermediate connection in the axle tube? Do I have to do anything other than pull to...

Few questions on changing out steering knuckle

Awesome. So those u-joint looking things are called u-joints. Guess I always associated u-joints with driveshaft as this is the first 4x4 I've owned. This is a learning experience for me. I've only done minor maintenance stuff (plugs, wires, belts, hoses, pads, etc) in the past. Sick of...

Few questions on changing out steering knuckle

Thanks for the reply. Just to clarify, the ujoint looking thing in the knuckle will actually get pulled through the knuckle with the hub assembly and give me the clearance I need to lower the knuckle off the ball studs? And, the outer cast of the knuckle I will strike with a ballpeen hammer...

Few questions on changing out steering knuckle

I need to put a used steering knuckle on my 98 XJ and had a few questions I hoped someone might offer some advice on. Does it make a difference if the weight is relieved off the suspension or not when loosening/tightening the tie rod to knuckle nut and upper and lower knuckle nuts? There...

    Steering knuckle year compatibility?

    Stripped caliper--hexicoil bidirectional thread?

The knuckle slide surface is worn from where the pads were improperly seated due to the missing caliper bolt I assume. Was going to see if a friend could put some weld in the grove and file it to shape. If I have to pull the knuckle to tap it right, I may as well pick up a knuckle from a...

    Stripped caliper--hexicoil bidirectional thread?

One of the brake caliper bolts on my 98 XJ is missing. Bought a new bolt from dealership, but the threads are stripped on the knuckle. Too much material missing to retap with same size. Did a search and saw helicoil inserts were a solution and had a question about them. I don't want to pull...
