'87 Renix 4.0L Auto: weak vs strong fuel-pump sound when cranking

Here is the latest research info: I called Carter Tech-Support (which is Federal-Mogul tech-support) this morning: http://www.federalmogul.com/en/ContactUs/ 1.800.325.8886. to ask them about inter-change-ability for Carter #P74057 (Walbro OE fuel pump) Carter #P74155 (Bosch OE fuel pump) and...

'87 Renix 4.0L Auto: weak vs strong fuel-pump sound when cranking

Here's some further info that I just dug-up in the change log detail for the 5 family vehicles I maintain: '87 XJ: 05/18/2009: 307,561 miles (which was ~ 21K miles ago): replaced OE fuel pump with Carter Pkg# 74155 (a bosch pump with a 1-yr warranty). Given the post I sent yesterday with the...

'87 Renix 4.0L Auto: weak vs strong fuel-pump sound when cranking

OK: just called up RockAuto Customer Service ... as good luck would have it, the rep who talked to me has a 99 'XJ and he recently had to replace the fuel pump on that vehicle ... which he used the entire set-up SPECTRA PREMIUM Part # SP7121M. Regardless ... here is the focus: I asked him 2...

'87 Renix 4.0L Auto: weak vs strong fuel-pump sound when cranking

re: immediate-prior thought "I wonder if a lack of a ballast resistor ... is causing the pump to get the wrong voltage, and damaging the pumps? " - I was thinking exactly the same thing while driving home last night in the '94 Bonneville. That is: especially since the '87 XJs do not have an OE...

'87 Renix 4.0L Auto: weak vs strong fuel-pump sound when cranking

I think I will go with the Omix-Ada #1770909 ... regardless a bit more expensive. I did some brief searching (all that I have time for right now) - what I found was interesting: some repeating stories from different people regarding 2-year-old replacement fuel pumps failing (which is near-exact...

'87 Renix 4.0L Auto: weak vs strong fuel-pump sound when cranking

Before the test that showed no flow from the pump, I had cut-out the twisted-together wire connections along the speaker-wire and replaced with a single tube-connector crimp covered with shrink-tubing - the speaker-wire looks like it nets to at least 14-ga diameter. I then charged-up the...

'87 Renix 4.0L Auto: weak vs strong fuel-pump sound when cranking

Been a while since I reported-back on this ... here goes: Without doubt, the fuel-pump is not pushing any gasoline int the fuel filter - so, I need to buy another pump. What I remember from reading other posts over the years: there have been some posts that say to stay away from the Airtex...

'87 Renix 4.0L Auto: weak vs strong fuel-pump sound when cranking

Yes ... agreed ... could be a short in the wiring under the base of what should be the fuel-pump relay ... I had a similar very interesting (at least I thought so) situation with the wiring under the aux-fan relay base that I had reported back on during April 2010 .... here's the link to the...

'87 Renix 4.0L Auto: weak vs strong fuel-pump sound when cranking

Thanks for all your quick replies ... here's what I found and did over the past couple of days ... encountered a couple of surprises (at least to me) along the way. Surprise #1: regardless this is an '87XJ and the manual link that I included in my first post is for 87-90 Renix, there is: A) no...

'87 Renix 4.0L Auto: weak vs strong fuel-pump sound when cranking

Last night I almost had to get towed due to following: Engine cranks over no problem; ignition spark when cranking no problem. When cranking but no start, can hear fuel pump buzzing in back and while ignition-key in on-position I crawled under there and sure enough fuel pump was buzzing to...

gasoline weeping from around pump face-plate pipe-perimeter: '87XJ

1 more thing... a suggestion: instead of using a heat-generating incandescent bulb with a 110V trouble-light to look up into the gas tank body area the first time (at least until you find what you're dealing with for a leak), it is likely safer to use a flashlight... I used a miniture LED...

gasoline weeping from around pump face-plate pipe-perimeter: '87XJ

If the leak is around the perimeter of the in-out pipes thru the sender cover (as was on my '87XJ), and if you go with the less-labor method of applying epoxy with a 1/4 tank full, then my direct experience feedback is to let the epoxy fully set for at least 24 hours before driving and/or...

gasoline weeping from around pump face-plate pipe-perimeter: '87XJ

Thanks for that answer. The slight weeping is from somewhere around the base perimeter of the metal pipe for the smaller-diameter fuel-hose fitting that is located lower on that cover... ... I confirmed this with the tank full and the hose off the weeping occurs and I can cause the flow to...

gasoline weeping from around pump face-plate pipe-perimeter: '87XJ

'87 XJ 4.0L: Few weeks ago started to smell little gasoline vapor from rear after each tank fill-up... with tank full got underneath it yesterday and found there is a significant weeping-leak from around the base perimeter of what looks like the return metal pipe into the round face-plate (right...

Exhaust pipe to manifold Bolt size

Thanks for the note - I'm going to proceed as those OE bolts are not splined... will use lots of PB Blaster over a few weekends and then try to twist them out via a hand wrench on the bolt heads. I'm gonna have to watch out that I don't twist to the point of maybe damaging the exhaust manifold...
