Its the cut on the gear thats reversed. Not the rotation. This allows the strong(flat) side of the gears to contact in forward rotation, leaving the weak (angled) sides for reverse.

Front lift does effect rear d-shaft angle. If the front is lifted less than the rear the t-case is pointed more upward, over the rear axle, creating a worse angle. If the front is lifted more than the rear the opposite. T-case is angled more downward.
Your transmission fluid is low. Fluid movement within the torque converter is what spins the transmission. When the fluid is low, the torque converter doesn't have ample fluid to spin the transmission until the pump can fill it up, causing a jerk, especially with the throttle being revved...
After I installed my 8.8 with discs, the braking was horrible. I removed the o-ring and it stops significantly better, but the rears are getting too much fluid and locking prematurely. When I have the time I'll put in a newer XJ booster and MC, and GC(4 disc) prop valve.
I don't understand the popularity either. Personally, a welded diff seems like a problem just waiting to happen. I ran a mini-spool in my axle and the forces it put on the axles and diff seemed outrageously high. I can vision a weld breaking and sending metal everywhere inside the diff. Then...
