    dana 30 ring gear fail

2000 XJ, stock 4.0, stock AW4, 231. 2" lift on 32" tires. 8.25 rear with OX locker, dana 30 in front with Trutrac, both regeared to 4.56 with Motive gears by me. It was my first time doing gear setup, but I'm a person who already had reason to own nice dial indicators and know how to use them...

    Alignment help/Very poor steering

Caster, yes more. And how much tread is on your tires? worn tires tend to follow grooves in the road more too.

    Need some flare advice

There is only so far you can trim without getting into "major mod" territory once you get close to the spot welds and leaving room for the rear doors on a 4-door. It is pretty obvious once you get into the job. I'm happy with Napier flat flares. Obviously steel would would be stronger...

What did you do to your XJ today

Finally replaced that oil filter adapter o-ring set, which wasn't such a big deal. Cleaned up starter brushes, and suspected bad starter is good again. Changed the oil, cleaned the air filter, lubed all the zerks, tightened up t-case shifter linkage bushing. Redoing my rear cargo area shelf to...

    NP231 needle bearing removal

Just finally got around to doing mine. I thought I'd do the old grease/bread hydraulic trick and just use the shaft to beat it out... turns out there is an oil passage hole that prevents. A $60 blind bearing puller kit like the on Anak linked to did the trick. Tried the Slide hammer first...

OME 3" lift - prep and extras??

Depends on how rusted things are, but the tools you list should do it. bottle jack, ratchet straps, jack stands go without saying. One thing you likely need and definitely should want (depends on year) is a slip yoke eliminator kit for your transfer case. T-case drop may work for a short term...

99 XJ Cruise Control Set Speed

You could get smaller tires, lower gears, or put a different speedo gear in the T-case and use a GPS to check the calibration. I run 4.56 and 32's and would be right on 30 mph actual speed with the computer thinking its going 35.

    Overcooling?

I'd suggest getting one of the bluetooth OBDII dongles, then the Torque app for your phone (or plug in a real OBD scanner) and see what the computer thinks the temperature is. Or, just go straight for the CTS. Also maybe blow out the heater core if the heater function is your main problem...

New to Jeeps. Want to buy my first. Difference between Cherokee, and Grand Chrokee

Yeah, XJ's and ZJ's have more in common with each other than they do anything from this century. The 4.0 is legendary for a reason. I live in a place where the AWD TC should make sense, and I have a 2008 subaru with a 5-speed, which is the epitome of that approach, and I don't feel the least...

Source for Transfer Case Rebuild Kits?

That Novak kit looks quality. I believe you get what you pay for, but am also limited on what I can pay for... and I know the difference was less than a tank of gas but I went with a USA standard set from Summit for about half that price. Bearings are Nachi Quest (Japanese, google it), seals...

Things you might as well replace when lifting

This When I put in the OME CS033RB heavy springs I had more like 4.5" unloaded initial lift in the rear on my 2000 and the vibes made it undriveable over 40 mph. So... SYE and a rear driveshaft and 4degree shims under the rear springs were mandatory. Also, even with the OME shocks it was...

Have a Fourth Grader? Go Cut Your Own Free Christmas Tree

Well, that would save 5 bucks. But since what grade you're in is kinda ambiguous for homeschoolers I wonder if we should wait until next year and get an annual park pass out of the deal too. I usually use a Bahco laplander for this, but I am totally in love with my new 20v lithium mini...

    Weld, no start

Might check your neutral safety switch if it is an automatic? Then regular starter relay diagnostics from there. I never disconnect the battery before welding, and I've welded extensively on front bumpers, rear bumpers, roof racks, rocker skids, front and rear axles, seat mounts, floor pan...
