ZJ electrical prob

I have ran this question on 3 other forums with literaly no inteligent response.

I have a '98 ZJ Laredo SE which I converted to 4wd about 2.5 years ago. The Laredo SE has a majority of the "hot" options, which is everything but a sunroof, garage door thingy seat heaters and seat memory.

Here is the problem. I have an intermitent short. The fuse (#16 if i recall) for the overhead console also runs the turn signals. It will blow at various times. Never the same time twice. I have replaced the multi function switch, and unpluggled a few items to include the overhead console. No worky. Even with them unplugged, it will still blow.

The scenario is that I can put in a good fuse. Start up the Jeep and let it run for 10-40 minutes. At a random point, the fuse will blow rendering the turn signals and overhead console usless. After THAT point, if the Jeep is not shut down, the attempt to plug in a new fuse results in an IMMEDIATELY popped fude preceeded by a severe load... interior lights dimmed, volt gage dropps...
But if the Jeep is shut down for any amount of time, the whole thing goes again. I have gone once for about days with no problem, but then it starts over.

Basically, I have torn down the entire rear of the Jeep (front seats to the rear gate) and traced the main wiring harnesses. No shorts found. No burned wires. I have also traced the wires via a copy of the related diagram from a FSM. No luck.

Here is one kick. I found that the fuse also runs power down to the neutral safety switch on the tranny. At one time, I unplugged the switch, and ofcourse, the Jeep would not start. I plugged it back in, and drove it for 4 days before the fuse popped again. To what, exactly is powered down there, I ain't sure. But, even with the fuse blown there is no change in the way the ZJ runs for the most part. It is hard to note a loss of power since I am running 33's and 4.56 gears behind a 4.0, so I cant really know for sure.

I have spoken to two friends who are affiliated with Jeep factory service departments. Both agree that there is a computer controlled or switched component that is causing th e problem, but we cant pin-point it. There is no turn signal short since the emergency flashers have worked flawlessly prior to and throughout this problem.

I figured I'd ask here since the ZJ and XJ systems are failry similar.
Any good assitance is GREATLY appreciated. ;)

i would check for chaffed wiring along the left side of the jeep under the trim panels. especially the rear cargo panel. i have seen aftermarket trailer wiring harnesses short and cause lighting probs as well. if it only blows when you use the turn signals you can disconnect the turn signal connectors one at a time until it doesnt blow any more.

I wish I had it that easy...

The hitch is a factory Jeep hitch and factory harness and plug. I plugged it into the OEM plug which it is intended to plug into. I had gone that route with the turn signals (and the overhead console and the neutral switch...) with no help. Didnt work as I had hoped.

There is something in there that I havent come across just yet. hasta

Thanks!

Remove the fuse and then use a volt / ohm meter and look for the short at the connector and or the light sockets. I had the same problem with my chevy found my short in the a piller drivers side. The wire were rubbing on each other and the plastic trim.
