XJ Steering Box Needed, we swap?

I'm going to upgrade to hydraulic assist steering sooner than later, but the steering box is holding me back and I need help if possible. Right now my wife drives our Jeep almost every day, she works less than a mile from home. Point is I can't have the Jeep down for a week.

So the part I'm stuck on is removing, drilling, tapping, reassembling and then re-mounting the steering box. If any little thing goes wrong I'd be without a Jeep for a while.

West Texas offroad will sell me a box ready to go for $260 but thats a lot of money in my opinion for a stock box. I'd be willing to pay the $125 to have them tap a box so I can just swap mine when the time comes. Here is where I need help. Anyone have a box laying around? Anyone know of a JY that for sure has one? Mine is in great shape so if someone has a spare I can barrow for two weeks I can give you mine once it's off and you'll have a spare again.

Any other suggestions? I'd hate to spend $260 for a stock box but right now its my best option. Anyone positive they can drill and tap a box and put it back together over a weekend? I've got $100 if you can.

FYI I'm in San Diego next to MCAS. The Jeep is 2001 Sport on 35's with my own custom steering.

Thanks all- Pahl

I have a stock box that you can have if you want it. It has a lot of miles but it worked fine when I pulled it.

I'm in Fullerton, but I'll be at Torrey Pines State Beach on Thursday and San Diego on Friday/Saturday if you want to pick it up.

Its really easy dude. i did mine in a few hours in the garage. probably could have done it quicker if i wasn't so damn color blind and didn't have so many problems deciphering the different color ball bearings lol spend the 30 or 40 bucks on a seal kit btw

I also have a spare box. you can use it for a short period if you want until you get yours back. i want it back though :) i also have the tap you can use if you need to save a few bucks. i want that back too lol

These are easy to do. I've got the taps and stuff to do them, and I have to do mine, plus I have a spare box laying here that was complete until we stole the input shaft, so I have parts. I'm over the hill from you on the border of Lakeside/Santee by the drive in.

I have a low-mileage box out of a......98/99 TJ. Same box but it's a straight ratio, vs. variable assist. Not sure if that matters to you or not?
I'm in El Cajon.

I'm going to take you up on this for sure. When are you hoping to do yours? Thanks to the NAXJA family I should have a box very soon!

Is the straight ratio higher than my variable that you now of? That sounds great and you are close...PM Sent.

It sounds like you don't need mine anymore, but if you still want it tomorrow, just PM me your number.

I'm hoping to pick up the TJ box. If that doesn't work I will still take you up on your's if that's alright.

To the others who have offered to let me borrow your box, thank you so much! I may still need that help but more than anything it just makes me happy to be apart of this site and this sport :D

I have a box that was drilled and tapped by Old_man. I keep it as a spare. I run a PSC large bore box currently.

it may have a slight dead spot in it, and could probably use a rebuild to make sure it is all good.

I would be ok with letting you have it to rebuild and swap into your rig in exchange for your stock box at some point down the road.

the box is located in La Mesa near mt helix, I will be there all weekend working on my rig.
