XJ fuel level sending unit

Mikel

NAXJA Forum User
Hello,
What's the year range fuel level sending units that will work on my 95? None of my local junkyards have a 95 and I can't seem to find new ones. If someone has a good used one, please let me know :)
Thanks,
Mikel

'88-'96

New, the better obviously.

Where are you?

You might ask for suggestions to boneyards in your area.

88-96 in theory. I'd go for a 91-95, 96 is the first year for ODBII so the connector may be different. I'd actually just look for one with the same connector. You can also probably just fix yours. Sending units are a wire wound resistor with a contact that rides on it. Usually the contact has come out of contact with the resistor. There should be 3 wires, one for each end of the resistor, and one for the contact. The couple that I've messed with, one on a caravan, and one on a honda had the wiper come out of contact with the resistor part. I just bent it back and all was well. Depedning on the gauge, it will sit at one extreme or the other when the wiper is not in contact with the resistor anymore. Anyway, go with a 91-95, they should have the same connector, if other years have the same connector, it should work too.

The problems I have are the following:

- The gauge is acting funny. Sometimes it goes beyond Empty and now it seems to be stuck at the middle of the range.

- It seems to leak gas through the opening for the wire.

Thanks,
Mikel

I don't have a manual in front of me, but you can test the guage by putting the sensor wire going back to it to +12 and to ground, you should get full movement on the gauge. Just check the service manual (you do have a service manual right?) for what wire is what. They may even have a block diagram troubleshooting section in there.

I have never seen just the sending unit either.
The sending unit is also part of the fuel pump mount, wiring and pickup tubes.
AZ can get the whole thing with a new pump, or you can buy just a pump but not just a sending unit.

Mikel, are you in Europe?

Thank you guys. I will pull mine this weekend. Hopefully the leak is something I can fix (Is RTV gasoline proof?)

I'm in Connecticut, but I'm from Spain :)

Yes but don't get it on electrical wires because it will corrode the connections.
