WTB: Front Axle for 98 XJ w/ 3.55 gearing

Hi, I bought my 98 XJ used and apparently the previous owner had to replace the front axle and did so with a 3.07 gearing.

The back axle looks like a 1.55, so I need to match this up by replacing the front axle. If anyone has something that will work, let me know =)

When I'm done with the swap I'll have a left over 3.07 axle if anyone is interested in it.

Thanks

Do you plan on lifting or going with bigger tires? If so, you can just regear. Even if not, you can regear as well.

I meant to say 3.55, yes it is an auto

Yeah, I was recommended on the forums that re-gearing would be more expensive than just getting a used front axle with the right ratio. I do plan on lifting, but only about 2 - 2.5 inches with 30 or 31inch tires, so I think the 3.55 gearing should be fine for that.

I'm in Long beach

Thats good to know =) Well, I already have 3.55 in the back, I should probably just replace the axle in the front, then re-gear them both later when I put 31s on them. I'm not sure about the quality of the front axle that is in there right now. I might be better served by just replacing the damn thing

i have a 3.55 ring and pinion you can have for free if you can find someone to put them in for you. my garage is in gardena at the end of the 91. all it will cost you is whatever the person charges you for labor and the price of a master install kit (new bearings/seals/shims).

you might want to change your location to show your area, or at least put it in your profile, it makes people more likely to help out if they know you're close to them ;)

Thanks for the offer GrimmJeeper! and I took your advice on the profile. Anyways, I'm calling around to get some quotes on the install, depending on the price I may take you up on your offer or I may end up just re-gearing the front and back with something lower.

Or if someone else here has a good price for a used complete axle with 3.55 then I can just do that and save the installation cost by doing it myself. I trust myself doing an axle swap but not regearing =)

So... I joined up since this forum has been quite a bit more supportive than jeepforum.com. So I gave Rob a call, prices seemed comparable to 4 wheel parts.
Does he do discounts for naxja members and or better work? I'm assuming you guys are all friends with him and the such, while I'm quite a noob =)

I wouldn't sweat it he's close to you and he goes out on runs with us. 4Wheel doesn't which means if your in a jam on a local run He'll be there or near by even on Sunday 4Wheel will tell you to tow it in on Monday when their open!!!

His price is considerably lower when you bring him the axle out of the vehicle and with out shafts installed. That might be where the bargain is

agreed, if you have a way to get it to him so he can work on it without crawling around on the ground and have done the disassembly work the labor time goes WAY down.

If you are willing to drive a bit, You can have my stock 3.55 vac-disco axle. Only thing I would say it needs is the fluid changed. A few things you could do..

Slide the fork over to "permanently" connect the 2 piece shafts, bolt in, bleed brakes and go (brakes have maybe 10k on them).
Swap your axleshafts/unitbearings (would have to add an add'l inner seal) in and use your current brakes.

I'm near Pismo BTW.

Jeeperjohn also does gear work, he is however a little further from you. Couldn't hurt to send him a PM though. Good guy.
