I was told I could use 285/75/16.. any of these two sizes is good

So your looknig for roughly a 33" or 35" tire? Why just those two sizes? There are a number of sizes in between those two that would fit on the 16" rim. I ran a 305 70 r16 (roughly a 33"x12" tire) on my FJ for a while and a 295 75 r16 on my Titan. (that was roughly a 32.5"x11.5" tire)
