Would you buy a 7.3l with REALLY high miles?

Yes, unfortunately I do.

My wife and I were in the process of buying a new house that had plenty of room for a tow rig and trailer. I have the money saved up for the truck too. I was pumped.

But, at the last minute, the sellers decided not to sell their house .... so we are still in our current house .... with no room for a truck and trailer.

If we can find a house, I'll get a truck. If not, I'll just keep the MJ road legal.

Wow, thats a kick square in the nuts. Good luck with house hunting!

As an example, this truck is listed at $4,900. It has 238k miles. Its an 01 F250 and the pics make it look clean, but you never know.

Is it bad to even consider this type of truck, or does it still have a lot of life in it? Or is it really a case by case basis?

Looks like a good truck to me. I know a couple guys around here that would snatch that up quick at that price. I have an 06 f250 and love it. I know its the 6L instead of the 7.3 but I have been real happy with mine. Of course I spent a little more than 5k too ;)

my friend drives this hoopD 95 PSD. It's 5 spd swapped, has a 60 swapped in, DPtuner, and some other nonsense. 300k+ There's not a straight panel on it, but he loves it haha.

I'd think about picking one up. Only a 350 though, can't stand that ttb.

Depends on who owned it before and how well they maintained it. With proper maintenence the 7.3 will probably live longer than you will. The main things to look for at that mileage is hubs/bearings, transmission, u joints, and steering issues.

I just bought a 2000 F-250 Crew cab, Lariat, 2wd with the 7.3 and Automatic tranny. 234,000 miles. I have a manilla envelope with receipts all the way back to 20k miles.

The oil pan is a big thing on these trucks. The oil pan cant be replaced without pulling the engine. There is a crossmember that sits about an inch from the bottom of the pan. Look underneath the engine for rust and major leaks. Minor leaks are going to be normal at that mileage.

ALSO - when you go to test drive one of these trucks, MAKE SURE it is DEAD cold when you get there. Pop the hood and reach to the back of the motor and feel the turbo. It should be dead nuts cold. If it isnt cold, the owner probably warmed it up before you got there (might have cold starting issues). As previously mentioned, extended cranking isnt necessarily abnormal, but on cold start idle, it should not chug, shake, or smoke (white or blue).

461,000 on a company f250 7.3 where i work, no idea whats been replaced on it though, i drove it and, it pulled out, steered, & stopped like any other used truck. this impressed me. i'm sold.

They do have problems with either injector or glowplug harnesses melting. I forget which

The issue is with the harness that runs under the valve cover I believe it chafes over time and wears the wires down

fact. Which harness is it though? I know it went on my buddies, I just couldn't remember which harness it was.

It's called the "Under valve cover harness." It controls the injectors firing. GP regulator also goes out but you can replace it very easily with a better one and be done with it. check out powerstroke.org or powerstrokenation
