Wont start sometimes 87 XJ Wagoneer

i dont get it my xj wont start sometime but other times it will i replaced the starter twice i thought it was because i kept going threw the river. it will start sometimes if i put it in nutral but most of the time it will be in park i dont know i replaced the starter relay switch i think the thing that clicks when you try to start it. i can hear my fuel pump come on and everything it just doesnt get power or some thing to my starter i got smart and bought a duralast so that i can just keep replacing it because every time i do it starts just fine for a couple of times. then doesnt its really embarassing especially in the gas station makes me not want to drive it please help

Sounds like you are saying the starter will not turn over sometimes. Correct?
The igntion switch could be going out, also the neutral safety switch could be going out, or both. They are both involved in the signal path to the starter. Research them in this forum, lots of good threads, pictures, etc on both problems already here.

In the mean time might buy yourself a $10 remote, under the hood remote starter switch with wires and clamps to jump start from the battery to the starter.

check if the starter relay is clicking the next time it won't start- if not, you're looking at a NSS or ignition switch. If it is clicking, than probably loose connection at or in starter.

Its most likely the Neutral safety switch on the pass side of the trans. There is a thread on here about cleaning, rebuilding it... It it starts every time in Neutral, but not in park that is your first clue...
