WJ brakes & steering for a preunner?

Would this be a good idea? I love the idea of having bigger brakes & it seems the WJ steering would better..Everyone seems to say its much more responsive.


Would this type of steering be good for a daily driver(80%)/jeepspeed type rig(20%)?
 
Cann you explain the difference to me...
I was going to go with currie steering but I really want to upgrade the brakes as well and that's why I now planned to do th wj swap because it seems perfect for me!

What's the difference between the 2?
 
the WJ steering knuckles have a separate arm for the drag link to bolt up to, instead of connecting to the tie rod. makes for a much more responsive steering setup, and better angles.

Casual, if you look on my build thread, you will see both the Currie and WJ setups on my rig. Having run both, I wouldn't drop a dime on the Curries stuff, it's an improvement over stock and is bolt-on, but the WJ set up has the huge advantage of bigger brakes and eliminating the inherent bumpsteer issues that accompany the Inverted Y design.
 
The official name for WJ-style steering is 'crossover.' Don't ask me why... but that's what it's called.

I ran the WJ brake/steering setup on my D30 and it was awesome. The thing could stop on a dime (for being an XJ)
 
Ya thats my main reason for upgrading but if the steering is that much better than thats also a bonus for me lol.

Realize that with the WJ conversion there is a distinct possibility that you will have to run a 16" wheel.

Kind of a bummer if you have $$$ invested in 15" wheels and tires.

Just one more thing to consider when deciding on a steering/brake setup for the D30.
 
Thanks for the heads up Karstic. I am finding alot of people only post the positive's of doing mods and forget to mention the drawbacks. I am waist deep in doing a 8.8 swap and everyone talks like they drop in with a 1/2 wrench during your lunch break. Far from it. I will have to buy wheel spacer as the axle is 1.5" narrower. Almost none of the stock hardware will work adding to the cost. etc.

I am doing a long arm conversion to the front and re-gearing the D30 to match the 4.10's in the 8.8. I was seriously thinking about doing the wj knuckle convserion as well but not if I have to buy new wheels also!

My 15x8s with 3.75" of backspacing just clear my WJ brakes.
 
My 15x8 4.5" BS steel wheels required the calipers to be ground slightly. The real drawback is having to buy/build a new trackbar and OTA mount, figure out a steering setup, and swaybar mounts. You can avoid a lot of that by running stock XJ steering, but then you lose half the reason for the swap.

Great point, I've been running 16's for years so wheel to caliper clearance wasn't on my radar.......
