Would a Ramsey 6000 be enough?

Something I commonly do is find myself stuck in the ruts of vehciles with much bigger tires SO I am wondering if a Ramsey 6000 would be enough to yank me out if I am high centered?
additional info: I have 27" BFG AT and a Trac Lock 8.25

In my opinion....no, 6000lb winch is not adequate for an XJ. Borderline, yes.You want one that can get you out of anything you want it too. Typical rule of thumb is twice the weight of your vehicle. So, an 8000lb is your minimum considering the weight of a stock XJ and any add-ons.

If money is an issue, check out the Smittybuilts. Several have them and are pleased with their purchase. It's no speed demon but, it still pulls. Seems like I've seen them for as low as $299 and free shipping.

I bought a Tmax EW9000 and so far I'm impressed. I've had a couple of very hard pulls and it didn't even blink when I really expected to stall it out. The Summit brand winches are supposed to be the same thing as the Tmax. Yes, they are made in China but, at least it's got a kangaroo on it.:D Tmax branded EW9000's can be had for $550 ish. I should add that my Tmax is really pretty quick. Much more so than a Smitty. It draws more amps too though.

You can go cheap on the winch, but it will be slow. Yes it will work, but you could have 1 course of a 3 course meal while waiting to spool in -LOL!

BTW: Isn't a 235X75X15 a 28.5 " tire? Why are you running a 27" tire?

I may be wrong about the factory tire spec BUT I measured it and it was 27"

Well the money issue is more that the guy I might be buying the Ramsey from only wants $100 with no rollers. Now I have a roller so that's no biggy. But $100 is REALLY cheap and I figure if it turns out to not work I could probably get back what I bought it for.?.?.?

It will be better than nothing, but don't bank your life on it. Personally I would bank that $100 for a better winch down the road. Keep an eagle eye on the classifieds, here and JU, I have found several deals before.

There is a TJ running around town with a 2500lb Warn ATV winch on the stock bumper  I always laugh at him when I'm in the XJ.

You'd laugh your ass off at me when I was a newb and bought a 2500 a year ago. ugh... The first time I got stuck it actually got me out but it was like... "Tension... drive... tension... drive" About 6 inchs at a time. Quicker than a hand rachet but not alot better... hahahaha

It is 100 dollars of course buy it. later down the road you buy a better one and put that one on the back. 6000lbs is okay just buy a good snatch block!

The cable is 5/16th.

To me, what is more important than winch capacity is the cable size. For safety purposes, you want the winch to be the weak link, meaning that it will reach its maximum pull and stall before the cable breaks. To save money, these winch makers size the cable right at the minimum. So after you get some kinks and some rust on that cable, it becomes the weak link. BAD.

The cable should break at no less than 1.5 times the winch rating. For a 9000 winch, that means 3/8 cable. For 6000, I guess the 5/16 will do.

I run synthetic cable on my Tmax. I really like it so far, it's held up well.

I really like synthetic cable too. Its so much safer than galvanized. I have a Mercedes Unimog with a Warn 15k hydraulic and 1/2" Amsteel Blue. If it wasn't for synthetic, no way I could carry that 1/2 cable up a muddy hill with a bad back.

Problem is cost. Not usually in the budget. Even 5/16" is gonna be $1.50 per foot.

I have no clue about synthetic cables.?.?.?

I have the older style of that. A little slow but pulls good. Supposedly they went to a higher HP motor & better solenoids. I got mine from www.winchdepot.com . It was $285 shipped.

Very easy to set up with in-cab controls too. JIM.

Wish they still had it for $285,, hahaha
I can't seem to find them onc raigslist for cheap. One guy was selling his xrc8 for $400!!!
I don't get it... I need to stuimble onto a great deal

I think a 6000 will work ok for you. Please check the cable though. I suppose that 5/16 would be ok on a 6000, but if you are even thinking of using a snatch block (doubles pulling power - half the speed), you gotta have 3/8".

......

Not true, when you use a snatch block, you have 2 lengths of 5/16" sharing the load. The winch can only pull 6000 lbs, no matter how many pulleys you run it through, the cable still only sees 6000lbs.

With enough pulleys, you could extract a tank with dental floss :)

a 6000 would do you for most stuff.
i bought the smittybuilt and i am happy with it so far.
ive pulled a 1 ton crew cab on its belly through mud with it
and i recovered myself when a jeep with a snatch strap could barely move me, we were more concerned about bumper frame damage from the tugging.
the winch slowly pulled it out and got me home..
