with a 5 inch lift? here's why:

i have a 3 inch suspension lift now from skyjacker...i know everything i need to go 5 inches ie longer swaybar links, t-case drop, etc....i'm going to throw on 2"spacers up front and some shackles in the rear...... but i also know i need a slip yoke off a YJ..so can i just swap the xj shaft for the yj??...or how does this work? i don't need the eliminator kit, do i?

93 xj, 4.0, auto, stock t-case

I think that an unmodified YJ shaft will be entirely too short.

I run a YJ slip yoke (it's only .25" or so longer than the XJ 231 yoke, and same 'supposedly' as an XJ 242 yoke) at 6" -+ with a 1" transfer case drop. But this is on a mostly trail rig that vibes from 10 dozen places at once-so I quit trying to track them all down.

At 5" you may be able to get away with a combo of the stock shaft & longer yoke, case drop. Some rear springs have some 'angle' built in but you may have to shim the axle to match the angle of the case output. Tom Woods site at www.4xshaft.com has good explanation & diagrams...as well as awesome driveshafts if ya end up needing one.

The YJ shaft will be WAY too short.

the YJ shaft will be waaaay to short.. i think what you may be getting at is that some guys use the YJ slip yoke... aside from being a little longer, the yokes themselves are a little smaller than the XJ ones.... so it will bend a few degrees more before it binds.. and running a lifted XJ without a SYE we need all the help we can get.. just replace the yoke on your driveshaft with a YJ unit and maybe slap in some new u-joints if they arent new already.... cheap peice of mind

The YJ "extended" slip yoke has been reported as various lengths. I think it was MaXJohnson who actually posted side-by-side pics, with a measurement indicating the YJ yoke is a whopping 5/16" longer. The real advantage of the YJ yoke is not the added length (virtually inconsequential) but the fact that it has a more open throat, and therefore won't bind up as soon when the suspension droops and operating angle increases.

5" is right "on the bubble." I know some people who have lifted that high and can run the stock driveshaft and slip yoke. I also know one guy who went that high and had the driveshaft fall out an eighth of a mile down the road on his maiden voyage at the new height.

At the very minimum, you should be thinking about at least the RE "hack and tap" SYE.

yea..first i was told to just run a YJ slip yoke..then some guy told me to run the whole shaft...i was thinkin it was too short...but i donno a lot about this stuff!

so looks like i'm going to get a yj slip yoke and some new joints...probably the cheapest way of doing things

thanks guys!

Heres a pic from Ed's page.I would do "anything" till I had the lift on and evaluated what your "real" needs will be.

that's the only difference?!? doesn't look like much but like i said i don't know a lot about wrenching...still learning. if i can pick one up used for a good price i might as well do it...at least then i don't have to worry about my shaft falling out down the road! haha

the reason is that i don't want to spend a lot more $$ to get to 33's. if i have to get an SYE then fawk it..i'll just keep my 31's and get a locker...but 33's do look AWESOME on an xj!

thanks again guys :)

Uhmmm..... I have actually.......

come across two different YJ yokes. A friend did some SYE this summer and saved me the parts. In the box were two different yokes. He said they all were from YJ 231's. I'll try and get some shots of them this week.
