i have a 87 mj with no tach i am looking at a 1990 xj cluster will it fit?? and what will i need to make it work??

you MAY need to swap speedo cables.

the speedo cable end was changed in the middle of 1987 model year.

other than that, as long as they both have the same number of cylinders, it'll work.

If the MJ cluster has idiot lights, you will also need to replace the temperature and oil pressure senders. The senders for the idiot lights are ON/OFF switches -- the senders for the gauges are variable resistors.

If you have a column shift auto like mine, you'll have to figure a way to mount the shift indicator in the bottom of the tach if you want to keep it. From the reaserch I've done, it doesn't look like a tach was available with the column shift.

The speedo cable change was in September of 86. To see if your '87 has the newer cable, look at the bottom of the speedometer face, if it has the letters 'NS', it has the newer style.

Are you done yet?? :D

Here's a few things I ran across while swapping mine, if you're not done yet!

I had to lower the column slightly to remove the instrument panel trim bezel. All the directions I've seen don't say you have to, but for some reason mine just wouldn't come out. Different angles, tilting the wheel, and bending it to the point I was afraid it was going to break. Came right out by just slightly lowering the column.

Mine had the newer style speedo cable, which you can't release from the speedo head by reaching under the dash. If you have cruise control, there is a short ( about 8") upper cable that goes from the speedo to a speed sensor, you can reach under the dash and unscrew this cable from the sensor and remove it along with the cluster. If you don't have cruise (like mine), you have to get underneath the MJ and remove a clip that holds the speedo cable to the frame to provide some slack in the cable, so you can remove the cluster with the cable attached, and have enough slack so you can get your hand behind the cluster to release the cable.

Change the bulbs in the replacement cluster while it's easy!

Hope this helps :)
