Will a '96 engine bolt up in a '92?

Can I swap a '96 4.0 into my '92 4.0 without any modifications? What mods, if any, would I have to make (computer, etc.) ? I found a good, low mileage '96 for a good price. Are there any other models that will bolt up without or with simple modifications? Thanks!

Yes and no. I did a 97 into my 91 and had to do the following
Relocate coolant temp sensor from back of head to Tstat housing
ground intake manifold to accept new PS pump bracket
used old fuel rail as 91 has two lines 97 only one
used 97 distributor
used 97 drive belt and pulleys.

If the new motor doesn't come with EVERYTHING like mine did and you use your manifolds/pulleys etc it will be an easy swap here's what I'd do
new rear main seal/ pan gasket
new valve cover gasket
harmonic balancer seal
All the usual, belt, hoses, tune up parts etc
Flush heater core and radiator

With both engines out and side by side the change over will be pretty straightforward. Take your time and be careful when you are done, your gas MPG will go down because you will feel like you have 2 more cylinders!!

Another question for asatxj

Thanks asatxj for the info. Will I need to change the computer ('96) or make any other mods that you know of?

I didn't have to change the computer. You would be wise to put a new 02 sensor in just to make sure that all is running properly. OF course you will hav to remember to get 96 engine related parts since the distributor etc are different.
OMT the top two bolts on the bellhousing are the backwards torx fasteners similar to the hub bolts. I can't remember the size (ford ujoint socket is the same) but I'd take the motor mounts off so the engine can drop down a bit before you attempt them.
