i just rebuilt my transfer case. New bearings, seals and chain. And added Tom woods sye eliminator and new Adam’s driveshafts front and rear. But now I have a whine that starts about 30-35mph. And when I slow down you can hear it til the jeep comes to a complete stop.
things I’ve done to diagnose.
pulled the front shaft. Noise went away.
no front shaft but 4hi, noise came back.
So it only makes noise when the front output is turning, either by the front diff or being driven by the chain.
Could it be new chain on old sprockets needing time to set in? The sprockets weren’t gouged or anything but you could see where the old chain was riding on them. I even went as far as changing the front output bearing again. No change in noise.
I listened to it closer today and when I’m slowing down and get 10-5mph it almost has a gear mesh tone to it which makes me think chain/sprockets.
It shifts fine, actually feels better shifting now than it did before, shift on the fly 4hi/awd works fine. 4low works fine.
im out of ideas. I may just put some miles on it this weekend and see if it quiets down or gets worse. But always open to suggestions.
