Looking for someplace to wheel and camp this coming Oct for a group of 6 to possibly a dozen vehicles. Looking for locations within the NF's and other non pay to play OHV areas. Requirements are:

Must have enough area to camp for up to a dozen vehicles, scenic/moderate trails, access to other interests such as climbing/hiking/biking etc. And most importantly...legal trails.

We'v been discussing Land between the Lakes...they state there are over 100 miles of trails in the area? Is it all open to 4WD vehicles or just the dirt bikes/quads?

Were also looking at a few places in West Virginia, Dolly Sods etc.

What's Uwharrie(sp) like?

Someplace in the Smokies?

Appreciate any input...Thanks.

Why not spend a little money and go to a place that will have good trails that are somewhat maintained by the funds from entry. It may just be me but if an OHV area is kind enough to let people like us use their property, I have no problem helping them to maintain it and keep it open for us to use time and time again.

Huh? :wow:

Never said i was against paying to wheel, done it many times over the years living in the NE. However, thats not what were looking for on this trip. Guess were looking for the solitude and scenery moreso than the wheeling this time around.

I was just trying to say that if you are going to wheel, then try to support the places that will allow you to do so. If you are looking for a place in East Tenn, it depends upon the vehicles that you take. Tellico is really good from what I have heard, but it the vehicles are stock to moderate, then you might want to try something else like Windrock. Personally, I think Windrock is a good place beacuse I can take a stock XJ up there with a set of all-terrains and have a good time or I can take an XJ with 5" lift on 34"s and have a good time also. There is many different trails for all different kinds of vehicles. It is private property and you must buy a pass for $15 per person per day but it really is worth it.

is there such a thing as a "no pay to play" ORV area in the National Forest System??
Last time I saw that was in SoCal...San Bernardino NF(Big Bear/Lake Arrowhead)if I remember correctly...if you don't count your taxes!

Nice place for some mild to moderate wheeling good campgrounds and easy to get to.

Very nice wheeling everything from mild to wild Crawford's offers a nice campground but has a bit of a drive to the trail head.

It all depends on how hard you want to wheel and whether or not you want it to be an all day trip on the trails or just enough to get your taste then back for lunch.

Uwharrie is nice for getting back to the campground for lunch or repairs then back out on the trails. Theres the lake right there so water sports are easy to be had also some hiking trails.

Tellico is best to go in and stay in all day eat out of the back of your truck.
Lots of great trails and close to areas to go white water rafting, rock climbing and hiking.

We just got back from Harlan,Ky great place to wheel and the people are very friendly. It doesn't cost to wheel or camp but it is good to bring money into the community.
