What's there to do in the Springs?

My wife and I, with some friends of ours, might be planning a trip to the Colorado Springs area. Should I drag my Jeep along, and who would be willing to meet and wheel with my ugly mug?

You know you're welcome if you all wanna head up the mountain a ways.

I'm not real certain on any entertainment stuff down that way as I try to avoid going down there. You have far more wheeling experience than me but I'd love to go. Right now the fishing should be very good (I say should b/c I haven't gone out in a while but it looks like Idiot Wind and I will head out on Sunday to see if the Cuts and Bows are doing their thing yet). If you want to get a line wet...I can arrange that. I have gear and you wont really need waders where I'd take ya. I'll PM my numbers incase you don't have them anymore.

There's plenty to do,it just depends on what you like. We've got plenty of "touristy" type stuff if you want to do some sight seeing.Bring your Jeep with you we'll (myself, Led, and the rest of the COS people) take you on a run. What dates are you planning on visiting??If you want some more info PM me.

Hope your a better angler and Scott. :) We were getting skunked during COFest last year.

Were you all fishing the Arkansas or still water?

We fished Willow Creek that feeds into Taylor Park Res.(outside Tincup), Mirror Lake(The Brookies were hitting drys), and Chalk Creek at the camp ground.

true....true. I feel this is the year though. I don't plan on working so damn hard to catch 2 10" browns over what a 2 day span? :sad1:

riverfever, we were fishing a small stream outside of Tincup, which you will frequent if you hit CoFest this year. I got some other ideas as well for that area. There is always the Ark though.

This is supposed to be Lawn Chers thread on things CO Springs but...he'll get over it.

Were you all near the Upper Taylor? I was in the catch and release section below the damn last year and some guy kept telling me that there was bigger fish in the smaller, upper section. My response to him was, "Screw you...I aint goin' anywhere and you aint gettin' this honey hole." :) I love fishing that spot. I took a day off a few weeks ago and went over to Gunnison. I was the ONLY person in the catch and release area. The snow is DEEP. I climb over the gaurdrail and sink up to my chest. So crawled down to the river. After an hour, I landed a gorgeous 20" brown that I casted to while laying on my belly and leaning on my right elbow. She was just in front of a boulder and took a 22 buckskin on the third cast. I love fishing.

I hope he said that with a grin. No mysis above Taylor :) yes, we were right by it, had to pass thru Taylor Park to go up back around Cottonwood Pass back to the campsite.

Were you flyfishing or using nightcrawlers on a big ol treble hook?

Flies-size 16 and 18 renegades.I mainly use a 5 1/2 ft. ultra-light spinning set up nowadays but still break out the flyrod every now and then.I used to do nothing but flyfish (been tying my own flies since I was 11) but most of the places I fish now are small, high mountain streams and beaver ponds with lots of brush so the spinning outfit suits my needs better.I used to fish Deckers, above Spinney (actually used to even catch suckers while nymph fishing here), between Spinney and Elevenmile, and a lot of the other bigger waters but its just too damn crowded now so I head to more remote and less crowded places.I save the nightcrawlers for places like Pueblo Resevoir.

That sounds perfect to me Planefixer. I love fishing the bigger waters but solitude is sometimes nicer and the fish are equally beautiful. If you're ever looking for someone to bring the refreshments, I'd love to join you.

Mark, I spent a week there after the Fall Fling '04.
We found PLENTY to do.
Pikes Peak, The Garden of the Gods, go for a drive south and west twords Canon City, and The Royal Gorge (I was dissapointed, too Disney like) then head south on State hyway 69, very nice scenrey find the Montville Nature Trail, that is a nice walk, if there are no Elk hunters, (don't go if there are).

There is alot of Wheeling out there!
We did not wheel however, cause I was broken. (So unlike me)

We're looking at sometime in the middle or end of June for a long weekend. Day of rafting, day of wheeling, yada yada yada. So I should bring some fishing gear then, ok.

What's up beeznitch?

Been working like mad, hence the limited web-wheeling time.

Looking forward to a series of long weekends this spring & summer.

How 'bout you?

Same old thang really. I fished last night. The spawn is on. I didn't have much time once I got there and really just went for a walk along the river but I saw lots of big tails. I'm heading back there after lunch and then again tomorrow morning. That's about it. We'll start the home search in a few months. I am taking a class this June at Western State (Gunnison) but I plan on being home on the weekends to look at houses. If you're going to be here when I'm in class, I'll be sure to be home. Looking forward to seeing you guys.

Been informed we are looking at the end of June, beginning of July.

Lots to do in the springs area Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak....ect If your planning on going rafting my suggestion is to go to the Liquor store in Cotapaxi and talk to Lauri she is the owner of the Liquor store and she is also a rafting guide we did a half day trip last summer it was about a 7 mile trip and the water was great 3.5-4.0 rapids then we went down the road a bit to Texas Creek and wheeled that area for the rest of the day at the top of the trail system up there is a Rose Quartz Mine really great souvienier (sp) to bring home. not too far from there is the Royal Gorge if you do the full day rafting trip you go right under the Bridge witch is the highest suspension bridge in the world.

Right out of the springs is Old Stage Coach Road and off of this road is many trails to wheel i.e. Saran Wrap, Eagle Rock, Mt. Baldy all of these trails can be checked out here http://www.4x4trails.net/ at the end of old stage coach is the town of Victor an old Gold Mining community witch leads to Cripple Creek there is gambling and lots to do in this area.

good luck and enjoy your trip to Colorado

Chris
