I'm looking for the root cause why CAT's periodically emit excessive sulfur aroma. My XJ's CAT is only a year old ... and the OXY sensor probably has 60K on it now ...

It seems to be running okay ... running temp range is 195-215.

Thanks in advance ...

If you didn´t replace the first CAT, because of a mechanical failure, rusted through or rattleing. Your second CAT may be failing also. But it doesn´t really smell, like sulfer. It smells like CAT. Alcohol in the gas (added to get rid of the condensation in gas station tanks). Fuel injector gas tank additive, excessive idleing, failed engine temp. sensor (rich) condition. Will both make it smell, among other failed sensors, even a plugged air filter. Very poor idle, is a sign of too rich, the plugs usually tell the story, covered in soot. Too lean can also heat it up and make it smell, often smells like burnt carpet or undercoating.
Sulfer smell, take a close look in your engine compartment for chewed wiring. Weasels and Ferrets, Rats and Squerrals, not to mention the occasional Cat. Take up residence, mark there territory and snack on your wiring. Sounds funny, but it´s more common, around here, than a failed CAT. Sure enough smells like sulfer.

Thats great! sorry to go off topic...I was looking through the forums, I let a.... well... you know, hit the next page, and POW what was the first post on that page! Sorry to digress just hit me funny. Carry on.

seanR ... bless you! I think you should go change your shorts now.

8Mud ... So you think I've got a Cat living under the hood ? And he smells like sulfur ? Damn, what have you been feed'n those varmits in Germany ? Sauerkraut ?

The only thing Cat's mark in these parts are aluminum rims ...

Just that a Catalytic converter smell never reminded me of sulfer. Kind of an odor all it´s own, metallic.
Had a Ferret take up residence in the wifes XJ, I smelled something, thought it was the dogs watering the rims (which they were). Ferret watered the inside of the engine compartment in retaliation. War of the urine. Sure enough smelled like sulfer, worse when the motor got hot.
Things really got interesting, when the weather turned cold and we turned on the heater for the first time.
Darned things chew the wiring, really, had to change a bunch. Story went around and it became apparent, it was a pretty common problem, nobody much talked about. Found out they offer various, weasel deterants, from high freguency sound, to sprays, for your car motor.
Funny, never have chewed the wireing on my Chev, but have chewed on the wireing of both XJ´s. Guess Jeeps taste better.
Have had many catalytic converters get stinky on occasion, most times at the change of season, when the gas companies add, gas dryer to there mixes. Sometimes after a long time at idle, stuck in traffic jam. Sometimes at startup, when the computer adds some fuel. Sometimes after a bonzai run up the interstate (no speed limits in Germany), really hot cat will stink some also, engine usually runs a touch lean, at triple digit speeds.
When I smell, the smell, I usually check the floor boards above the CAT. just to make sure, it isn´t getting hot enough, to melt something.

I remember reading somewhere on another board that the exhaust can sometimes smell like the CAT is goin bad briefly from a quick change in engine speed, like a rev then dropping to idle quick. I forgot how this cause the stinky but it does, my VW used to do on occasion when coming to a stop from revving in ssecond gear. just a thought.....
