tell me.
option A: re gear to 4.56 (d30f and c8.25r)
option B: skid it out, sliders, tcase, gas, diffs
option C: rear bumper/tire carrier, ridgid co
option D: no slip lockers

a. regearing would be nice for the gas prices and power.
b. im thinking my pay checks can do the skids.
c. that bumper is sweet. admit it.
d. i want!

i have to space out the money and i wanna do something worth while for now.
what do yall think!?

Why doesnt anyone ever consider a winch?
I just looked through member pics and it occured to me that there is a large number of people spending lots of money on long arms, 35" tires, bumpers, racks and so on, but very few XJs with winches. Even many built up "hardcore" rigs out there without winches. I see the same thing when Im out on the trails, not just with XJs but all brands. What gives? I understand this to some degree for you guys out west with nothing to winch to, but the east coast guys, shame on you.
Ive had a winch for a number of years, maybe only used it a few times but I wouldnt go without one now. I understand budgets and priorities but should a winch be so far down the list?

Regear, just make sure that you have the tires that you want now or gear for the tires you will eventually have.

As far as winches go, I have had one mounted for over 4 years now, i have used it once for recovery, and it wasn't for myself. other than that it gets used to pull fencing, or move heavy loads around (cause im too lazy to push).
But if you start asking around you will find alot of people that have their winches on quick mounts so they can swap them to either end. I noticed at the last NAXJA fest i was at that prolly 3 rigs had hardmount winches out of about 16, all most all of the rest had them on receiver hitch mounts. IMHO a winch is needed but it should be behind gears lockers and brakes.

I know what you are saying about the receiver hitch mounts but I think if you look around on the trail, on the road and in the member pics, you will notice alot of huge rigs (not just Jeeps) with no winches. There is also a similar thread going on at the moment where someone asked how to spend $3000. Three pages of suggestions and no mention of a winch, hard mounted or otherwise.
Its true that Ive probably used my winch as much around the yard as on the trail. Its a tool, plain and simple. Sometimes the tools you bring, you use on your rig, sometimes you use then on other rigs, but thats why you carry them.

For me, I can't justify the cost for one. Heck, I haven't even replaced the front bumper since there isn't a need yet. Sure it'd be nice, but since I never wheel alone there's always someone to pull me out.

If there's a situation where only a winch could get me through it, I'm probably not running that line w/ my DD.

I know what your saying but if it's it's portable why carry it around on the front of the rig for no reason? most people that have this setup leave it at home or strapped down in the back, leaving in the reciever just kills your approach angle. plus around town it's asking to get it stolen.

skids.
stuff you bang up on rocks can get very expensive to fix, and very quickly.

as far as the winch debate: i'll never own one. i'll never need one. i'm not that hardcore. 1 inch and 30s. i've had it for 6 years. it'll never be any higher. i never wheel alone. in my opinion, its stupid to wheel alone in the first place. i do trails that don't even require skids and i have plenty of fun. sorry, a winch just isn't in the cards for everyone.

the winch is coming. as far as that, im doing alot of building now ,since i have a honda as my dd right now, i dont need a winch yet, cuz im still building, no time for wheeling. the winch is def on its way, i have a bumper for it also, its empty but i have a tray, i have tow points and i never wheel alone. ima going to try to regear it under 900 and with whatever i have left ill put to skids or the winch foundation. thanks for the help guys!

Why not build it so you don't need one? I saw a ARB bullbar with a winch on a Toyota Sequoia or Nissan Armada....anyway...They NEED one. Winches slow...Gears and Lockers Fast.

A winch is on my list. Way down on the list.

I say membership first then regear and spend time getting to know your Jeep on the trails. True, the Rigid is real nice.

Are you in a hurry?

Regear shouldnt cost 1200 bucks....figure about 400-500 for parts and maybe another 150 per axle in labor if you pull them out of your Jeep yourself. Most of your better 4wheel shops charge about 150-200 for a bench install if you bring them just the axles.

That will leave you with at least a few hundred bucks...id spend the rest on a set of AJ super rails.
