what diameter for a race cage?

Depends on what you're running under. Current SCORE/BITD:
Vehicle Weight
Under 2000 lbs. 1.5" x 0.95"
2001 to 2500 lbs. 1.5" x .120"
2501 to 3000 lbs. 1.75" x .095"
3001 to 4000 lbs 1.75" x .120"
4001 pounds and over 2.0” x .120”
I think Jeepspeed follows SCORE(score class 3 with the jeepspeed rule modifications, I think).

Edit: Here's the section from the Jeepspeed rules:
2.0 Sanctioning Body Regulations: JeepSpeed rules do not in any way replace or modify the competition and safety regulations issued by the race organizer or sanctioning body. Stock or Production class rules will apply in Jeepspeed Challenge Class 1700 (or SCORE Class 3 rules in Jeepspeed Cup Class 3700 ) unless modifications are specifically allowed herein.
Here's where you can download the Jeepspeed rules.
http://www.jeepspeed.com/rules/rules.shtml
It's only 7 pages. If you want to compete, download it and memorize it. :D

About how much does a 1500 car weigh? That first table I posted covers everything up to Trophy trucks. It's all by weight, not by class.

Go 2" .120 wall. If I remember right, a race XJ can tip 4000 lbs when race prepped (cage, seats, fuel cell, etc). I may be wrong though.....

I just weighed up a stock samurai tonight and it weighed 2080lbs. Thats with one size bigger KM2s, the back seat in, a spare tire, and no top. think of it that way, that thing is a tin can

My cherokee pre-cage and pre front bumper, trail-ready loaded weighed in around 3600#. 4000# is not unreasonable for a reace ready Cherokee.

I don't know of any 2" OD cages in any Jeepspeeds. Most are 1.75 and some of the older cars were 1.5 OD.

I don't recall anyone at BITD tech ever looking at the tube size (my car was 1.75) but maybe I didn't notice. If/when you get SCORE teched I think 1.75 OD will be fine as well.

no BITD or SCORE. MDR
You probably shouldn't plan on racing MDR too soon.

MORE runs races out of Lucerne and Barstow and they are a well organized group however I don't know that they have their own set off rules. They probably use BITD's rules and BITD allows 1.75 OD X .120 wall.

I always tell people to consider retail value of the car your building. For example, you can build your cage out of 1.5 OD tube and race MORE, however someday you may want to sell your car but a lot of the potential buyers aren't interested because they can't race it in BITD or SCORE. Just something to consider.

We have weighed about 60% of the Jeepspeed race cars. The lightest was 3650lbs( 2wd , 4 cyl, manual trans, 2 door. The owner swore it weighed about 3100 lbs, he was shocked!) and the heaviest nearly 5000 lbs ( 4wd , 4 door , Ford 9" front and rear, full of gas, race ready). FYI, one of the lightest 6 cyl cars is Helgeson's Cherokee currently leading the championship.
