Was I wrong?

Around 8-9 months ago my daughter had a problem with my XJ. I suspected a head gasket at a min due to antifreeze in the oil. We towed it home from Alton. Drove it on the tow and off. Ran with some valve noise, no knocks, white smoke coming out the exhaust. XJ sat for all that time as I debated/tried to save some cash. Finally said screw it, threw it on ebay. First time it went for over $800 but the buyer backed out due to shipping. Second time I local dude bought it. He's picked it up and swears it knocks like crazy and "needs a new motor now." Now he had started it and turned it around here in order to be towed to his place and said nothing about any knocking at that time. Told him it wasn't knocking when I had it running. He also complained about tranny fluid on underneath but that was due to a line leaking which I replaced/fixed over a year ago. I just never got around to cleaning under the XJ. It never leaked a drop after that to my knowledge and fluid levels were checked once a week even when the daughter drove it.

Recognizing we don't have both sides of this story, I will venture an opinion. When someone tells me that an engine has antifreeze in the oil, that means it "needs a new engine now" to quote the buyer. If he tried to run it or drive it any distance at all, he likely did more damage than was there at purchase. From what I see in your ad, you told potential buyers that the engine needed major work. If he didn't see an engine rebuild in his future, he surely will the next time.

I am guessing he drove it and overheated it. Your ad clearly states the motor problems. Sounds like his problem to me.

I will have to agree, you disclosed the fact that the engine needed major work and disclosed any other information you could. The only thing that you didn't include was the amount of time that it had been sitting.

I bought my 87 on ebay for about the same amount ($537). He did disclose that the engine under the hood was trash. He also said there were some spare parts in the rear that will be included.. To my suprise when I went to pick it up, it was a spare engine COMPLETE! and a few other odds and end parts for the XJ.

True the ad doesn't state how long it sat. Sorta forgot that but I did mention it to him a few times. Hell I even told him the reason it sat was cause I was trying to come up with the money to rebuild it myself. He has stopped calling and emailing so he's either decided to live with it or has other ideas. Thanks folks.
