warn winch

Does it have cable on it?

corroded/oxidized electrical connections inside the solenoid housing/solenoids themselves.

Worn brushed/dirty contacts in the motor.

would be the first two things I would suspect. You'd notice if a hard part was bad, but electrical degradation would have been gradual and slow, not something you'd notice all at once.

come to the crawl and I'll take it apart and clean it for you ;)

I was thinking a good cleaning may be needed.

It has been gradual. I may fix the brake while I'm in it

I use rope. You may have noticed the rope burns on Brenden's neck? Good call Byron.

Current is your buddy on a electric winch.

Check...

Connections to solenoids

Every thing needs to be clean and shiny, dirt, corrosion, pitting, and tarnish will affect the ability to transfer current to the motor.
