wanna get the damn spare tire out of the cargo area

i wanna get that damn spare tire out of the cargo area, it is seriously annoying. that is the only thing i hate about the jeep!

what are my options?

i was thinking of just building something like this
http://www.4x4wire.com/jeep/tech/carrier/zj_roofrack/

but i think i may want a full roof rack, for down the road like a hi-lift or something. especially because i play tournament hockey and 4 guys with gear in an suv is a PITA and id love to be able to put the sticks and maybe one bag up top.

pics are always helpful!

i dont want it on the rear because my fiance drives it sometimes and it would be a PITA for her to get the tire out of the way to get the hatch up.

also should i cover the tire with something, will the socal sun affect the tire adversely or anything?

thanks guys!

You have two options besides in the "trunk".

1) On the roof:

I ran my tire up there for about a year and a half, i never covered my tire and its still perfect, and my roommate runs it as his spare now and no problems what so ever.

2) Rear Tire carrier:

I have built one now since i went to 35s and yes, it sucks and blocks my view when making right lane changes. Its not too bad, but it still does cover some of my rear window.

For me, I think its better then having a huge tire on your roof but in your case, I think a 30 or 31 would be fine on top with a 3.5" lift no worries.

I ran a tire carrier exactly like that for about a year on my old '89. Someone here on the board hooked me up with it, but I don't remember who. It was a guy who was in the Navy or something. That thing was solid and held my 31 in place all day long. Only suggestion would be to put something to lock it. Anyone remember Azusa Canyon when I just about ripped the rails off the roof? Good times, good times.

yea thats what im concerned about. lol

i am gonna run 31s so i think the roof is a good place for it.

Yakima Load warrior.

I got it on craigslist with the tire "hold down" bracket for $80.

It retails for like $350 for the rack and $75 for the bracket...

Search Craigslist you get good deals on roof racks.

Yeah i found that in the middle of the week at like 11pm, and it had just ben posted. I sent an e-mail and 5 min later she said its yours. I picked it up the next day in LA.

Just my opinion. If you put your tire on the roof is the little lady gonna be able to get it down should she get a flat? I was concidering putting mine on the roof, but that is alot of weight to have to mess with. I have a stock carrier and the view out the back was not bad with a 33 hanging on it, and was not that hard to open, wife had no problems with it.

ha...good point...however we have triple A. so if she cant then she can call them.

there is a stock carrier???

Honestly not trying to make a sales pitch but here is the one I have
http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=965140

There is another version that mounts only to the bumper and latches to the hatch, Its less desireable becasue it puts added stress on the hatch

Your rig wheels Allen....nice photo shop work there dirty and all:D
