Vin numbers

I have what I believe to be 2 identical 2000 XJ's but with different Vin codes. Does anyone know what the 9th digit represents?

One is a "X", the other is a "8".

In a Jeep XJ Cherokee VIN, the "check digit" is the ninth character, which is a number or the letter X, which is used to verify the authenticity of the VIN by acting as a mathematical checksum based on the other digits in the code; essentially, it's a security feature to detect fraudulent VINs.

So if every else is the same except for the 9th digit and the last 8 numbers, are the Jeeps the same?

That sounds logical.

Get the detailed equipment listing at the link.

Well, they may still be optioned differently. The VIN covers the year, make and model. The link Tim_MN posted will give you the detailed build sheets for both. Too bad it only cover 1998 and up.

The only thing I can't visually confirm is the factory tire/wheel combo, everything else is the same!

"Big bro" I bought brand new in '00, "Lil sis" I bought in Jan '18!

Hmm.. I think we need to see a "family" pic!
