I have a 89xj with what I believe is some type of vacume bottle just behind the passenger side of the front bumper. Does anyone know what it is for and what it does? I need to relocate it or remove it.

Any thoughts,
Anyone else removed it?

TIA,
Michael

That is a vacuum bottle; good guess. You need it to operate the sliding fork on the front axle, move doors and louvers in the HVAC system, to operate cruise control, and as a brake booster. Possibly other things, too but those come to mind immediately.

...and yes, you can relocate it to the engine compartment if needed.;)

Thanks

Thanks guys. I will have to find a more permanent re-location for it then.

Thanks again,
Michael

Actually the brake booster has its own reservoir, and its own check valve, so brakes will work even if the bottle gets smashed, but the "blimp" behind the bumper is the reservoir for everything else vacuum-related.

That explains that part, then. I had a hole in my vacuum line (right under the battery, wouldn't ya know) and didn't really try the brakes with power off so can't say that they did or didn't have vacuum from that bottle. Makes sense though...

But the rest of what I said, yah!
