IMHO - look at the usual suspects -- the vacuum hose as it passes around the battery tray and/or the vacuum blimp (reservoir) and it's one-way valve (early models).
The "other way", is to use a compressed air source regulated to 15psi or so to provide pressure to the line feeding your dash controls -- block-off the vacuum source fitting at the intake manifold -- no motor runing and then use your ears or an amplifier to "look" for the leaking noises... this method can lead to some crazy stuff -- and glycerin mixed with dish-soap and water can be used to locate some minor leaks...
