v8 conversion in XJ questions.

I picked up a fuel injected 89 ford 460 and a 4x4 c6 tranny. I want to stick this into my XJ. I know people have put small blocks into these. But has anyone installed a 460? I have plenty of mechanical knowledge, all the fabricating equipment, and I have fabbed up plenty of suspension work before. I know it's gonna be a tight fit, but will it fit??? Does advanced adapters or any other company sell the motor mount swap? Any help is appreciated. It's going into a 89 Jeep Cherokee. Thanks,

In terms of axles, I'm running a 31 spline currie in the rear, and a dana 44 with hardened axle shafts and ctm's up front. I don't know what I want to run for a transfer case yet. So the drivetrain should hold up to the power. Suggestions???

Get a hammer, drive from the backseat.
you should check Advance's webpage and Novak-conversions

A small block Chevy is a very tight fit. Heck a 4.3L Chevy V-6 is a tight fit. I don't think it's going to fit. I wouldn't even waste the time trying. If you do get it in there, the truck will be so nose-heavy it won't be safe to drive on or off road anyway.

There's a guy up in Michigan with a 454 in it. I haven't seen it in action personally but I've seen some pics. It looks pretty sweet to me. Better start bracing the holy crap outta everything.

I like the idea of a 5 litre. The only reason I was thinking of the 460 is because I picked it up out of a parts truck. So I had this complete motor, harness and computer in my garage, ready to run now. Was just figuring out what to do with it. Throwing out possibilities. I have always wanted a v8 in the XJ, that's why I brought it up. Bounce it off you guys and see what you thought.

I would sugest selling it for a 5.0 and aod combo. That to me is the ideal swap v-8 for the xj. It is smaller and lighter than a 350 and still has the aftermarket suport that can build the hell out of it! I have a 86 5.0 and AOD for such a swap but the tranny is a 2wd tranny. I'm looking for a 4wd tranny, plus my funds are quite low right now. So she sits and waits!

If I had it to do over, knowing what I know now, I would NEVER do a conversion. It has cost me so much time, money, and downtime that it wasnt worth it.
It has more power than I can possibly use in a XJ. breaks everything and sucks gas down something awful.
the fun factor ended a long time ago

sell the 460, the 5.0 is the smallest HxLxW V-8 plus lots of aftermarket.

Yeah, so what do you think a running 460 with everything sells for now days? I'll have to do some checking. Thanks for all the info...

i love my lt1.. its plenty of power, and its fun to smoke the tires.. the dana 44 int he back is holding for now but i am going to put a d60 in it.. if you have any question call marc or frank at union county 4wd. 908 624 1119 .. they have both put lt1s into xj's and could certainly steer you right.

hey if you need a tow rig find one with a 5.0 and swap the 460 into it and use the 5.0 in you jeep. but if you don't like the down time build a stroker.

Hack the whole front of your XJ off at the firewall. Tube it out and hang all the sheet metal back on it. I too think it would be pretty sweet if you had the time/tools/money.

Find some guy with a SAMI and sell him the 460 drivetrain for about two grand and then get that 5.0. :firedevil
Look at the date on this thread. :firedevil Searching is cool, but seriously, this was last May!

Yeah, I was kind of suprised this thread was brought back up to the top also. I got rid of the motor last summer. I still am running the stock 4 litre. I'm hoping it keeps running, which I'm sure it will. Until this next winter. Then my plans are to replace it with a stroker.
