Used AC compressors

So I'm five years without AC in my 01 and I'm ready for some cool air.

The AC compressor hasnt been howling. But when I HAD AC it howled a lot. The LAST time I had it charged it was gone in three days.

So I figure a compressor and dryer are in order.

Im thinking of gettin a used comp from the pick and pull. Is there a guideline for used ac compressors?

Heck, is there a way to check mine just to make sure?

I would get a new one and call it a day.

At best, you'll find another 01 at the JY, and that one in itself will already be 11 years old...and likely worn out like yours.

Some replacement parts are like underwear...you don't want to buy used, to replace what you have.

Was the clutch making noise or is the compressor locked up? Alot of times when there is a leak you will see some oil residue at the shaft seal or condensor if there is a crack or at a hose connector o-ring. On my 2000 there was a leak at the evaporator coil which was a bit of work to find. I used a/c sniffers, die/ black light and a high nitrogen charge and I couldn't confirm the leak with out a tear down of the dash and hvac box. I didn't see any leaks but I would loose my charge after a week.

The thing was screaming like a banshee. Last time it was charged it got some oil added and it quieted down and then I lost the charge...

New surplus compressors, say on ebay, on dirt cheep, don't waist time and money on used, probably leaking compressor!!!

I have FIVE 1980s Renix era jeeps, 3 are DDs, and I have never, in 35 years wasted time installing a used compressor!!

Find all the leaks first, ALL of them, fix them, install a new expansion valve (or what ever they used that year), a new drier, new hoses, new o'rings and a new compressor, and do it ONCE!!!

Fair enough! Thanks for the info. Sometimes used is fine, sometimes not. And since I've never dealt with AC issues (in a four wheeled vehicle) before I wasn't sure.

I have a friend who can get me jobber prices on Four Seasons products at Advnace. So for $150 I think I'll just go with that.

Again, thanks for the information. ya'll saved me a headache.

I got my last compressor for $35 on Ebay, wholesaler close out, with out the clutch. I had a good clutch-bearing assy I reused.

Before that it was about $65 with the new clutch, never paid more than about $89 new on Ebay for the whole thing. Check out www.rockauto.com as well and see what they have. I have gotten some stuff like a $200 NSS (dealer) OEM NSS for $25 at Rockauto on closeouts!

Also check www.ackits.com they have an AC repair chat forum, and great guys that know AC!
