Who knows of any HDT/MDT truck graveyards in the area.

I'm looking for something very specific.

Road Ranger RTOO-9513 with an SAE#2 bellhousing.

yes, I need double (triple actually) overdrives. It's looking like this will be money better spent than nearly a thousand dollars on a new third member.

Hey Munchie, you may do a search for Don's salvage in Des Moines, Iowa. I beleive they will ship too...that or Spillmans salvage...I think they both deal in large truck items.

I sent emails to both of those places with what I needed.

I found one the other day, it was cheap ($425) but they haven't responded to emails or calls. I don't think they want to ship it, even though the picture shows it on a pallet already.:banghead:

with the triple OD @ .61:1 I can cruise 70 @ 2400 RPMs in the weinerbox with the 5.57 rearend that I have now, and have close ratios for climbing the hills with my 180HP.

also check with sam's Riverside in des moines, that is who I ment other then Spillmans.

I figured there must be some place around INdy as well, but I haven't been able to find anything with the google.

seems like HD truck salvage yards are a "who you know" kind of thing.

I guess the big question is; Can Manche drive a 13 spd?

Long shot try!

Take note before you call.... It's still 1987 there I am not positive they know the results of The Civil War.

There is a big truck parts yard in Terre Haute In. just off hwy 70 at exit 11. It is called Russ Fishers truck parts.

Yo, if Chz can jam 13 gears then anyone can...well, almost anyone...hmmm, good point...you may need some lessons...you bring refreshments and I will teach. Bring Jennie too :D

You going to swap the trans in for me too? Cause that's a long way to drive without having the lessons frst.

I think 'll be alright, I'll find a farmer friend to teach me. It doesn't look too hard. I've floated gears before, the whole "range splitter" thing is a new wrinkle, but I think I can figure out.

Will I need air to the trans for the range splitting stuff?

River city truck parts in Louisville ky. They even have a website out there.....

they didn't have a good one, but he recommended me to another place that's looking for me.
Powertrain of louisville.

Real nice guy on the phone.
Thanks

What is the difference?
Final gearing is the same weather it is 1+2+3, or 3+2+1.
All adds up to the same thing....

yes.

final drive ratio with a .61:1 OD will end up being about 4.10

Which is damned near identical to my original 4.33's with a 1:1 5 spd.

Plus I have a 15 MPH drop from 5th to 4th right now, so with close gear ratios I can actually drive up hills and stuff.

Wind resistance is going to kill my mileage, not the OD. Right now I'm turning 2800 RPM's to go 55 MPH, so it can't get much worse.
Believe me, the U-Haul Owners Group (U-HOG) has discussed the issues at length.

besides, soon enough it's going to run on waste motor oil.

Nothing to splitting ranges, you just flip the lever and start over. Road Ranger 13 speeds are either 3+5+5 or 5+5+3 if that makes any sense. I've driven trucks with everything from 3 to 20 forward gears, you'll get the hang of it.

Here's another thought. See if you can find a Brown-Lipe "brownie box" auxillary trans. They were divorce mounted in the drive shaft. I know there are some companies out there that sell remans, but they haven't been built new in many years. They came in a wide variety of ratios, in three and four speed units and were used in a lot of different medium duty trucks. Having two un-syncro'd transmissions to shift, at the same time, is loads of fun!

Those overdrives are gonna kill your fuel mileage. Mileage wise it would be better to swap gears.

Rev

I'm certainly no expert, but I think the point Rev is making is... yes, a 1:1 gear with a tall final drive will be the same as a overdrive with a short final drive, but the trans will operate more efficiently in a 1:1 gear than any other gear since it can drive the rear end direct without any gears involved. So when using any gear other than 1:1 you are losing some efficiency from the transmission gearing in the form of heat.

From what I've read, the shift in newer trucks seems to be from a 1:1 with tall rear gears to multiple overdrives with short rear gears, so maybe manufacturers have determined that isn't a big problem anymore.

I've looked for one for a while now. They're just not out there too often, usually don't have the brackets you need and people want nearly as much as a roadranger. It was my first option, because I could leave the syncro'd trans in place and still lend it out to people, just tell them not to touch the lever.

Possibly, but it doesn't matter to much I think. Wind resistance from going another 15 MPH is probably way more a problem than the 10% I'll lose in the trans. The 5.57's in the rear are simply to expensive/difficult to replace. This is probably why it ended up with 5.57's in the first place. 4.33 thirds are rare, and terribly expensive.

After you get the feel for a big truck trans, it'll become easier to shift than a Toyota.

You just became my 13 speed mentor.
