anyone kno9w what transmission they came with 98 ZJ with 4.0

42re i'm pretty sure. not that i'm a guru in the automatics department :hang:

My brother has one and the trans is going out. I saw a AW4 on CL and thought if thet was it I'd swap it out for him.

Oh well I'll have him crawl under it and check it out. I just thought since it was the IL6 it might be the same trans as well.

No, unfortunately, like 5-90 said, most ZJs didn't come with the aw4, which afaik is a better/stronger tranny... Why they were different, I couldn't say. Might just be one of those Jeep things that doesn't have an explanation, like the starter having one metric and one standard sized bolt....

I belive:
The 42RE was used in ChryCo pickups of the same vintage - check for the same tranny pan shape in 4WD units.
The 42RE has a removable bellhousing, so you just swap the case.

Most transfer cases in the last 30-40 years have used the "Dana 300" mounting pattern (like all of the NP/NVG units, and most of the BorgWarner units,) and ChryCo uses NP/NVG extensively, so it should be no trouble to mount the old transfer case to the new transmission (or just bring the transfer case over, if the driveshaft mountings are the same.)

You can probably put in an AW4, but you'll need to use it as a manual (the 42RE electronics won't control the AW4,) and OBD-II will throw a persistent code because it will think something is wrong with the transmission. Probably also need to fab up a mount for the AW4 as well, but the Grand body style was the same 1993-1998, so it shouldn't be terribly difficult.

www.mallcrawlin.com has a thread about the conversion.
If the addy is wrong, google search mall crawling or some such. Just back from a helluva night - could have the URL wrong...
