Transfer Case, SYE and Other Mayhem

Hey guys, back from Marana, AZ. Didn't get to wheel at all this summer because of the trouble with the rig. I barely made it back to Aurora on Monday because my transfer case is ready to go mammary glands skyward. (Let's just say the wife and I prayed it home.) Bad x-fer cases make a horrible sound btw. I ended up making a bad start anyway on Sunday when the wheel fell off the trailer about 40 miles east of Tucson on I-10. Had an awesome buddy who got a new wheel and hub free of charge from Harbor Freight and brought it out.

So the question is ... what model years transfer case will work on a "95? I plan to get one out of the junkyard tomorrow, clean it up, check it out, and put it back in Friday. Saturday I have to leave for work in Oklahoma City. I would like to put an SYE in also but that may have to wait. Don't know where to get one in the next 48 hours.

Thanks for any input. Contracting out of state sucks plus I don't get to wheel and fish as much. I just keep telling the wife that things will get better. She might stop believing me soon.:D

You'll want a '95 - '01 case for a direct bolt if the rig is stock. If you have an SYE then you just need to worry about the 21/23 spline input change. In which case any '91 plus 231 will be good to go. An older case could be made to work but 231's are a dime a dozen. Sorry about your troubles, glad you made it home okay.

in a 95 it should be a 23-spline input gear regardless of whether its going behind an AX-15 or an AW4, but IIRC, the lengths of those 23-spline input gears for those applications are different, and while the longer one will work for both, the shorter one only works for one... I can't remember which is which, its been too long since I opened up a 231. Man, its nice to be able to say that. :eyes:

Good note, the AX-15 uses the short input while the AW4 uses the medium. It would be best to just match the transmission to save any headache. The medium input of the AW4 based case does not like the AX-15. I believe as Chris eluded to that you can use the short AX-15 based case with the AW4 but you are going to have less spline engagement if you go that route.

occasionally one of my synapses fires properly.

Pulled a xfer case today. Just looked for the '95 with the same tranny and found one. My daughter helped me. 4Wheel Parts has an sye kit for $182 so I might go get it in the morning. Thanks for the help. Hope it goes in quick tomorrow cause I still have to get my tool box set up and inventoried for OKC.

Good to hear you are back. I know what you mean about contracting out of state. I just spent 15 months in balmy Minnesota during the coldest winter in over 50 years. Where is global warming when you need it?
