Transfer case lowering

Can anyone give me a quick run-down on what to expect on a transfer case lowering job. I've got the 1" spacers made up from gojeep's site, but my local offroad shop says to only go 3/4" or i'll put the fan into the shroud and/or not be able to shut my hood.
The nuts seem to be ready to come out but the bolts on each side i'm worried about stripping...they gave me reason for concern...it's a standard, any concern about linkages? what about the exhaust is going to pose any problems....?
Thanks!
'89 xj 3" budget lift, manual tranny..(peaugot one apprarently), everything else pretty much stock.

Don't worry about the hood not closing. The offroad shop obviously doesn't know a thing about the Cherokee. I can count at least five manufactures of tcase drops.

I have done the Go-jeep mod to and have not had one single problem. All the bolts are metric thread adn you have to double nut the studs to get them out. Otherwise any hardware store can hook you up with the proper bolts, just bring one of the nuts with you and match it up.

Post on the Mod board for any modifaction to your XJ, This board is for OEM only.

I had my t-case dropped 1.75" while I was waiting for my SYE to come in (had to do it, at only 1" drop and 8" of lift, my slip yoke was sliding out/stripping/slipping whenever I would decelerate), anywho, no problem with fan, no problem with hood, etc, etc. Your "local offroad shop" must only work on Rav-4's. (disclaimer: I wouldn't recomend dropping your t-case 1.75", I only did it because I had to, and I only did it for a couple of weeks)

Thanks for the input. Can you describe how to "double nut the stud" technique? Sounds like a newbie question but i'd like to be totally prepared. You guys did not run into any problems at all with linkages? any other mods that had to be done? Basically sounds to easy. put jack underneath, pull bolts/studs on one side put in spacer with longer bolts, do up, repeat for otherside. I get kind of nervous with these half hour jobs, Murphys law, etc....
Thanks..
Make me wonder about this shop, the guy I talked claimed to have had a cherokee and did a t-case drop. I'm getting my alignment done tomorrow, and getting them to troubleshoot my binding/mystery noise problems...

Run a nut up onto the stud but then back it off a partial turn. Run the second nut up into the first, and use two wrenches to hold them tight. Turn the entire unit to loosen it. I had better luck with one of mine when I tightened the first nut enough to break it loose. Just don't turn it so far that it breaks the tackweld on the nutsert...

excuse me.. if this seems lame. The dub-nut technique is done after one bolt and one nut has been taken off, and the t-case/crossmember has been lowered slightly on the one side. and it is used to remove the remaining stud? the new/longer bolts are then simply screwed in the original holes, doing away with the one up one down configuration, or do i need to get 2 longer studs as well..(everyone just says get longer bolts...)
thanks

I was trying to correct a vibration, so I put on 1-1/4" spacer. It didn't solve the problem, so I removed it (and replaced the motor mounts - problem solved).

Anyway, my '87 is a manual tranny and at that tcase drop - the tcase worked fine, but the tranny linkage for 4th and reverse didn't feel right. They went in okay (and never popped out), but it never felt as if the tranny was completely engaging those two gears - I assume due to linkage problems due to the drop. The problem went away when I removed the drop.
