I have an 89 XJ. There are currently 2 hoses going into the tranny on the passenger side. I have a thierd hose that came disconnected and cannot find out where it goes. It looks like it could go in to the tranny but neew some direction. Is there 3 cables (metal) pluged in to the tranny or just two on the passenger side. Is it needed (it does not leakand the trany is full of fluid). Can I just cut it off or am I looking at problems down the road if I dont find where it goes. This XJ is a trailer queen and never sees the road.

Thanks in advance!

You have a 'heavily' modified 'trailer queen' XJ and you dont know what a vent line looks like or where it goes? Can we see some pics of your rig? Who built it?

The vent line that is most likely hanging is to ventilate the trans so it doesn't explode when you shift into overdrive. Feel around the top of the tranny (give it a big hug) and you'll find the nipple (no offense) that the line connects to. There is also a vent line on the top of the tcase, it could be from either.

Good luck.

The tube does not look like a vent tube. It has a metal tube on the end similar to the tranny lines. I built my Jepp but am not real familiar with the Tranny. The metal tube has a 90 degree bend in it. Again it does not leak fluid, but I am concerned that it may cause problems in the future if it isnt put back where it belongs. I did do an engine tranny swap this year and the pipe/tube may have come loose fro some where. I have looked over and under the tranny and can only see one place that it may fit. If anyone can look on the passenger side of their trany to see if it has 3 lines connected to it that would be great!

how to post pic?

JB,
I would post a pic, but can't figure out how to link or attach an image. My husband (Chris) and I have built the rig ourselves, but a friend helped with engine/tranny swap as we aren't as up to speed in that department.

This does sound like a vent line -

- the "90* metal piece" - is that hollow, like a vent tube? -- try blowing in the line - I'll wager that you'll be able to pass air through it easily and that the metal piece that you're dealing with is the vent-tube that's supposed to be pressed into the top of either the tranny or the t-case (basically, a short length of steel tube is pressed into a hole in the case to provide a place for the vent hose to connect).

While blowing the hose (not sorry - had to) have someone listen under the hood for the escaping air - that should help you conclude that you're indeed working with a vent - then you'll need to discover if you've got the t-case or tranny vent and re-attach as appropriate

Thanks - i'll give my Jeep a blow job tonight (with my wife - 3 some) HAHAHA!
