Tires for the Sierras

Since I drive my junk on the freeway, I've been thinking about more street friendly tires.

How do Thornbird's or Truxus A/T's work in the Sierras? I'm not even trolling.

I'm probably not going to do anything harder than Prarie City or Miller Jeep Trail ever.

Anything else that's really streetable (bias ply), and works decently like an IROK?

P.S. Always remember kids, DFP!

I absolutely love my BFG AT's.
they surprised me a ton off road and have great road wear and are really quiet.
what size tire do you want to run?

Never had a traction issue.

MT/Rs? You ran them before, why not go back? My junk gets driven to and from the trail with no problems. I know the MT/Rs are hard to come by right now though.

how so?
i got my 35 mtr's in a day...
now i want to go wheelin!!

rubicon anyone...?

The 37'' MTRs are/were damn near impossible to get. Anything lower and most places should have them.

I like my mtrs too. Suck in mud, but thats really the only downside that I have seen.

Phil, MT/Rs and Maxxis Big Horns are good options. But for a really aggressive A/T, I would look at Nitto Terra Grappler. Seriously.

x2. those tires were kick ass on my old XJ. they rode so damn smooth too. I used the BB's and I am yet to feel such a nice tire on and off road.

Phil - The bfg's are a street tire. You definately notice a difference if you've been running MTrs or some such for awhile. I've noticed alot of just slipping off boulders with the ATs that just doesn't happen with my MTRs. Not saying the ATs aren't good, the difference is just noticable.

I know MTRs wear for crap though unless you keep your alignment in good shape and rotate them all the time. You may want to get rid of that spool too if wear is a big issue.

My 0.02.

Not sure who you got your tires from but mine had to come from Chico, and all the bay area goodyear warehouses are out of stock.

got mine from Ken's Tire Service in Livermore.
Ken's a great guy and when it comes to tires he gets it done. went there on monday. said i wanted 35 mtr's. got them mounted and balanced the next day at 10 AM.

no seriously though. anybody down to go to the rubicon? after gettin 35's, a front aussie, homemade 1/4" steering box brace, and soon to be ordering front Alloys, i really really wanna go back. i had lots of fun last time, and maybe this time i'll do it when theres sunlight...
(sorry phil, dont wanna hi-jack the thread, just seein if its worth it to organize something...)
thanks

Spool, yo! :D :D :D Dude, we need to go wheeling again. The spool is as gone as half of my roof. :shhh:

I was thinking about being cheap, but America's tire says ATs are only like $30 less per corner than the Goodyears.

I ran the Rubicon my first time with BFG A/T's. They worked just fine on the trail. My wife has them on our stock 2000 XJ and they work great on the street.

I've run BFG Mud's on my DD/Trail rig and they are noisy on the street and suck on wet pavement. They also vibrate at certain speeds after they wear down a bit.

I've run the MTR's for a couple of years and would buy them again. Quiet on the street, tough on the trail, and they wear decently if they're rotated regularly.

Goodyear was on a 4 month strike, so most places will have difficulty getting tire sizes that aren't in high demand.

I would agree with Matt, other than the Bighorns, when they lose their siping, sound just as bad as LTBs or SSRs. The grooves don't go down very far. About 25% of the way, the siping is gone.

that being said, when I decide it's time for 35s (within months), I am going back to Bighorns.

Sounds like MTR's are the way to go when my AT's wear out.

I havent driven the Rubicon But have ridden the trail. Am interested in making that happen this summer. Ill just have to risk it on 32's :laugh2: hoppin to get my 44 in and my 30 regeared first.

Yeah, I knew I had no idea what your were currently running when I posted that. It has been way too long.
