ive tried searching but nothing comes close to what im lookin for. im curious as to what size/type of spindle that people are using for their bumper/tire carier and how they attach the tire carier to it (ie: what size tube to hold polyurithane bushings, berrings, ecct). im building one now and dont know what to get for the hinge for the tire carier. its going to mount on top of the bumper and needs to be able to hold a 33 inch tire. its going to look something like this.

I just used a 1" trailer spindle with a round mount.
http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200314611_200314611

Then got two 1" I.D. and 2" O.D. sealed ball bearings

A short piece of 2.25" x .120 wall DOM
A short piece of 2" X .120 wall DOM
1 dust cap

Figure out the spacing for the bearings and cut a piece of the 2.25" to cover the spacing and add 1/4" for the dust cap. Slide a piece of the 2" inside the 2.25" to provide a bottom for the bearings and plug weld it from the side. This holds the bearings appart.

Just slip it over the spindle and tighten the nut enough to take up the slop.

Or don't put the spare on the back because this is advanced fab and we don't do that. :D

Thanks for the info guys, got mine on order now. :)

After breaking a 1000 lb trailer spindle (rockstomper, rocklogic ect) hinge and finding many others that broke theirs too, I stepped up to a 1750lb version from jeepbuilders.com

I havent broke that one and wouldnt use anything less again. I have a screw type latch that helps support the tire, but those that have the traditional clamp style latch should beware. If that hinge snaps, the tire and carrier are gone, be it on the freeway or on the trail something to think about. Search pirate4x4.com for this for more info.

Im definately using a screw type latch as its the only one I think will work with how im designing my bumper and will keep rattles to a minimum. Im also going to try and keep as much weight as posible on the bumper instead of hanging off the edge.

Those jeepbuilders ones look to be the same as what I'm using (my bearings ID are a touch bigger) and what almost every commercial Aussie tyre carrier uses such as ARB and Kaymar. I've never heard of one that size breaking.

Cheers

Been in a rig that has had one compared to mine without one and have noticed no difference. This is my daily driver and i don't wheel it all that hard.

That's what makes all the difference. Aside from the expected loss of rear window visibility (which is annoying) the drawbacks are the limitation of departure angle, added length to vechile, and if you're really in some shit the change it weight bias could make a difference.

I have one but I'm about five years behind the curve of styles (saves a lot of money!).
