I'll be purchasing and installing chain link fence in the next 2 weeks and was wondering if anyone had anyone had any tips or tricks that would help in the install

I got 3 estimates that were through the roof (they claim metal prices went up, but Home Depot prices have stayed the same)

1 drive through gate
1 walk through gate
approx 100' of chain link with 1 tie ins to other properties

Thanks

John

The one time I installed a small section, I used the Jeep for tension....bad idea. Get a come-along.

When Ive done them Ive used my winch on the XJ, worked great and a lot faster than the comalong... Ive used the comalong before and by yourself it sucked with nothing to hard mount it to..

Rent a fence stretcher ... it has a bar (usually wood) that clamps the wire top to bottom for an even pull. It's much easier to use the right tool for the job and it will look much better when your done. When I built fence, I stretched a wire between the corner posts to use as a guide when setting the other posts. This keeps the "line" of posts straight. Make up a jig ( 2x2 set to length) to set the distance between the posts.

PS: If you run barbed wire across the top, never lift it with your hand when attaching to the post. Use the fence pliers or the claw end of the hammer. But then ... you military guys use that razor wire ... don't you ... :spin1:

Is there something wrong with that razor wire.... I think it does the job really good... HAHA

I use to supervise the fence crew years ago for our flood control channel work. I've installed miles of chainlink fence and actually it is one of the easier jobs to do and rewarding to look back and see the finished product. Make sure that you use the right size posts. The way we use to install the fence is to string it from the corner posts and connect in the middle. You get the tightest fit you can that way. Depending on if you are running a tension wire on top or bottom depends on the sequence for installing the fabric. We use two bars that hook the fabric in the top middle and bottom. The fabrice is pulled with a com-a-long together. Chainlink will weave together if you cut the top link and the bottom link of the same wire. When you do the weave their must be enough slack to make the weave. Take the com a long off and then tie your fabric with tie wires and hog rings.

If you want to contact me, email me back channel and I'll give you my phone # and I can explain it alot better.
