When I drive my '96 xj 4.0, I notice that while I'm driving down the road and let up on the gas for traffic or something, then when i press the accelerator back down the transmission feels like it thuds into gear, it's an automatic by the way...is that normal or should i be concerned...thanks for any suggestions or ideas in advance

Are you sure it is from the tranny? My 98 makes noises like that all the time and it comes from the 8.25 axle. I have talked to several guys and they say all 8.25 axles do this, even thought all the u-joints are tight, etc... Just a thought...

Okay..first the easy thing. Are you sure teh Tranny is topped off with fluid? If it's not full it will clunk into gear.

Next, transmission and/or motor mounts will cause a clunk sometimes. You might want to take a good look at it. If you're chaning the trans mount you should go ahead and do motor mounts, and vise-versa.

ya i got an 8.25 and it does clunk no biggie. but do check your rear DS where it connects to the yoke on the rear diff. I had a decent clunk and just thought nothin of it till one day i was checkin rock bites and saw that the straps holdin the ujoint were bent and the ujoint was sloppin back and forth in the yoke.just something else to check.
