Thoughts on cams and such

I blew a hole in the side of the block of my 4.0 in my 2001 XJ a couple weeks ago, so it's been out of commission. I'll be picking up a 1997 ZJ tomorrow as a DD, so I can play with the XJ more since it doesn't have to get me to work/school and back. Besides suspension/lockers etc, while it's sitting, and since I'll be swapping engines anyway, I thought, why not build a stroker? The plan for me as of now is to find another 4.0 and also find a 4.2. I want to take the crankshaft and connecting rods out of the 4.2, have them polished and ground as necessary, and throw them in the 4.0, possibly have the block bored out depending on finances, and put a hotter cam in it. My Jeep will now be used as mainly a trail rig, so torque is what I want. Horsepower, I don't care as much. I am a college student, so I am on a budget. I want to get the most torque for the best price as I can. I'm planning in doing small things such as getting a bored throttle body or boring mine out, doing a gasket match on the intake and exhaust ports, a more free flowing exhaust, and a cowl intake. I'm not expecting magical numbers out of this thing, but it would be nice to be able to roast a few cars off the line on 33's. I've been around engines for all my life, and I've rebuilt a few myself, but I haven't gotten to build one for performance yet, so this will be my first performance build. Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!!!

You'll find a lot of helpful info. in the links at the bottom of my "sig".

Definitely read Dr. Dyno's stuff. Also, another person who builds strokers/other engines for a living, Russ Pottenger can answer any question you may have for your build. He has been building the strokers for the 4643 Team Naxja heep.

Alright awesome!!! I'm looking forward to drawing myself in performance 4.0 knowledge, I'll definitely do a lot of research from everything before I actually build my own. I'm excited for my Jeep to actually have balls once I'm down with it haha, thanks guys!!!

How big would you like those balls to be?
The size of coconuts or the size of water melons? ;)

I would like them to be the size of watermelons, but my wallet wants to keep them the size of walnuts hahaha, If I can stomp the gas and turn my 33's with stock gears, I'll be ecstatic lol

If ~265hp/325lbft is enough for you, a clone of the the 4.6L low buck stroker recipe would be a good way to go.

Oh hell yeah, that'll do every bit of what I want. Sounds like a plan!! As soon as I gather funds I'll gather stroker parts, at which point burnouts and carnage shall ensue :firedevil

doing a gasket match on the intake and exhaust ports,

Do not gasket match anything. You can clean up the head ports a bit and port match the intake manifold to the head. But don't make the intake runners larger than the head ports. Smaller is fine, but larger and the air will be hitting a wall on the way in. On the exhaust posts clean them up and polish them. Don't match them to anything.

Right, that's what I meant lol
