Teraflex SYE - extreme short shaft?

I ordered a SYE from PORC a while back, it showed up as a Teraflex 231SS. Drop shipped from Tera manufacturing. Not a problem. Went to put it in and there are no grooves cut in the splines for the snap rings. A problem, maybe. I searched some for info about their "extreme short shaft" (231ESS), but it was slow going on dial-up. Sounds like the ESS doesn't use the main snap ring at least maybe not the speedo snap rings either. With this tail housing the speedo gear would need them, is the ESS tail housing shorter? I'm thinking this thing is all mixed and matched. PORC had me call Tera manufacturing, after a couple hours and few calls back and forth with Tera. They were sending me a "call tag" which I would stick on the box and send it out. I called today, a week after the first series of calls, and I "was supposed to send it back" on my dime. That's not very good customer service if you ask me. At this point I ask if someone can identify the parts, is it mixed nuts or whole cashews? If it is the "extreme short shaft", should being 3/4" shorter be to much to run a stock front shaft?

Alright I'm done now. Thanks, Adam

I dont know, but you got me scared now because my PORC SYE showed up in a Teraflex box... I havent opened it yet

I took a look through some pics I had of my Teraflex SYE way back when I did it, and found this one of my shaft.

Now, my kit is an older kit that still uses the caged needle bearings while yours appears to be a re-design and does not use them, but there should be enough similarity. Both your pics and mine have the large splined area where the plastic speedo thing presumably goes, but mine does have groves for the snap rings. This is only a guess because I can't claim to be an SYE expert, but I'm tempted to say that your kit was manufactured incorrectly. I agree that it's terrible customer service to make you pay for their mistake.

With that said, It's been two and a half years with my Teraflex SYE installed, with no real issues.

Edit - Forgot to mention mine is the normal kit, not the Extreme Short Shaft.

Heres my JB Conversions shaft.

They look wrong but it's new code, I guess.

As for the SYE, I guess I'll try to call again monday. Maybe the "customer service manager" was just on his rag friday.

It's pretty common to have to pay for shipping back to manufacturer on your dime. Remember they are going to pay for it going back to you and there is no way for them to know if the stuff they sent was incorrect in the first place. Send it back the cheepest way you can I bet they will pay more for the shipping than you.

Just sucks waiting for parts twice. The only real problem I have with paying the shipping, probably $10, is that I was lied to about it. I'm pretty sure it was even the same guy, need to start writing names down I guess.
Oh well, more down time to fix everything else I guess.

Thanks for the replys fellas, Adam

Whats the issue? You seem to have EXACTLY everything you need!

Looks like everything I got in the box for my Advance Adapters SYE. What year is it going into? I put it into an 03 TJ so I think the speedo sensor is different, but it still had the 231.

Looks like Rockcrawler.com did a writeup of the ESS a few years ago. You might check out the picture if you haven't seen it already. The ones you posted looked closer to mine, which was a "standard" SYE.

The Advance Adapters sent super detailed instructions.

As for shipping it back. I would send it the cheapest way that I could WITH a way to track it. So if something else happens you can at least prove they who signed for the package.

Says in the first post, there are no snap ring grooves cut into the splines on the main shaft. The large snap ring(which isn't even in the box) holds the drive gear/syncro assembly on the main shaft, and two smaller ones hold the splined speedo gear in place.
