I bought my 92 4-door knowing there was a 4wd issue. The front wheel drive would just not pull but the rear would. So after a few tests I figure out for sure its something internal. I am suprised because if there was an issue like a broken chain, gears or main shaft I would hear something. After opening up the fill hole and sticking my finger in the metal glory hole I didnt feel what I should feel. Something was missing. 30 min later my case is on my bench split open.....

Tell me whats missing?????? :eyes:lol..

Theres no damn chain, oil pick up tube or screen.... :wierd:WTF???!!! I dont understand. I know it didnt come from the factory like this. What im trying to figure out is why someone would take the stuff out. What I think may have happened is the chain busted for some reason, took out the oil pick up tube and screen. Maybe they couldnt afford it so they just put it back together:gee:????? who knows. Ive got a spare case so Im replacing the stuff thats missing and see what happens.

heres some more pics

WOW. That's special. Maybe someone got sick of chain slap.

You are the maybe not so proud owner of some sludge. :gee:

That's a new one for me :roflmao:

I wonder how much your fuel economy will change when it's assembled with all its parts. I know when I drove around front driveshaft-less for a month or so it was noticeably better.

That's quite a lot of shavings... I'd make sure everything gets cleaned real good before it goes back together.

Unless its a disconnect axle then fuel mileage isn't going to change much. The front end is spinning all the time anyway, and it doesn't take much more to turn the driveshaft and the chain.

I would look at this as a good time/reason to upgrade to a wide chain kit in the case.

Hey why you have it out could you take a picture of the wholes or bolts needed to remove it form the transmission. I have to do that tomorrow.

That is crazy. Looks like the synchro is missing too.

There are six of them on the front. If you have a gearwrench it makes it easyer. 14mm or 9/16th will work IIRC.

Correct on the sizes. A swivel socket and an extension will make life even easier.

What, you don't like having a rare NP231 equipped with 2lo gear conversion?

yeah pretty sure it's 14mm or more likely 9/16 since it's an SAE fastener.

I'd toss the whole spare case in and forget that mess... inspect the planetary set and the synchros carefully, they may have removed it due to other issues.

I actually do like having the 2low. lol

the spare case I have is in pieces, im just taking out what I need. Everything else looks fantastic. I had a better look at the back half of the case and if you look at the second picture from the end of my post you can see where the chain was grinding on the inside of the case, its chewed it up pretty good.

i always do.

Fixed my mistake. I knew either 14 or 15 was the same as 9/16 but could not remember which. LOL!
