i put the tom woods shaft and aa sye on my 94 xj and when i put the 231 case back in the jeep and went 4wheelin it would pop out of 4lo only on flat trails and going down hills. going up hills it stays in 4lo. anyone got an idea. plus it takes a good yank to get it in 4lo. this is a crappy situation.

So when you pulled the case apart did you notice the little nub that pops into the grooves of the shift thang (I have no idea what it is actually called). It keeps the shift thang in place in 2HI, N, 4HI, and 4LO. Is it engaging? Is it worn? Is it torqued in place, cause you can unscrew it from the exterior of the case if I remember correctly. Also, I guess check the exterior shift linkages for bind and correct installation, although if it is connected wrong, you shouldn't be able to shift anyway. Your best bet may be to pop the case open again and take a look around while someone shifts it.

That really sounds like an adjustment problem.I always set mine while its in the neutral position!
