How hard would it be to change the manual tranny to an automatic in a '90 XJ 4X4 4.0l? My gf saw one that she can afford but its a maual.

Teach her how to drive a stick. Seriously, its a lot easier to teach her than to go thru the trouble to add an automatic.

its easy if you want to manually control the auto tranny, otherwise you need to do a bunch with the electronics. I plan to do this in my 88 MJ pretty soon. Another consideration is that the automatics came with a deeper gear ratio in the axles because the tranny has a deeper overdrive. email me if you want me to forward you some info on doing a swap: [email protected]

it's a pretty easy swap.

the things you'll need to get are:

Front and rear driveshafts, tranny, torque convertor, flexplate, steering column, shifter plate, t-case shifter rod, shifter cables and tranny wiring harness.

there's a 4-pin connector underhood that the tranny harness plugs into. this is the ONLY interface between the tranny and the rest of the vehicle's harness. after that, all you gotta do is punch out the plug in the firewall, and put the tranny computer under the dash.

you may want to grab the pedal bracketry from the donor vehicle for the swap, and find something to cover the hole that the clutch master cylinder resides in.

aside from that, it's a remove+replace kinda swap. you just gotta remove+replace all the right stuff.
