stuck caliper Qs?

My caliper is sticking on and off, but it stuck long enough to make my rotors RED hot and the caliper caught on fire. My question is, how do I know if I've ruined the rotors/pads?
edit: No worries, I'm replacing the caliper, I just want to know if I need new rotors and pads too.

Since it caught fire, I'd replace them.

Getting the rotors THAT hot can temper them and make the metal more hard/brittle than soft/maleable so I would definitely replace both pads and rotors.

Fire is never good for something you really really really need to rely on like....um.....brakes.

If your rotors were glowing, at the very least they are warped & it just gets worse from there. Rotors for all XJs are super inexpensive, When I was doing my brakes I replaced the rotors just because they are so cheap. I'd change the brake lines at the same time.

I wouldnt say they are "all" super cheap. I just had to replace the composite rotors on my 99 and they were almost $50 each. Thats far from "cheap" in my eyes, especially when the cast versions were only 20 bucks.

Ouch! I stand corrected, I did them on my 87 & 95 at the same time & the 87 were just under $20 & the 95 were just over. Even $50 is relatively cheap compared to either of my Ford trucks, 2wd or 4wd though.

My '88 is 2wd so the rotors are integrated with the hubs. So when I replace the rotors I do wheel bearings and seals as well. :(

What is your family and friends worth? I would CHANGE, it could be your life you saved...

I used to be plagued with sticking calipers on my old XJ and I always ended up having to replace the hub a short time afterwards. In the end, I decided to replace the calipers whenever the brake pads wore out. Never had a new caliper and pad stick yet. I got a lot more use out of the hubs and rotors and probably saved some money.

For good measure, replace the brake hoses too.

( cooked my front passenger caliper a month ago
the brake hose was cooked "well done" at the banjo fitting.)

my rotor survived the incident, i pulled the jeep over..burning, but not on fire yet.
