Starter question

I've been noticing that my 88 XJ has some trouble starting sometimes. I've upgraded the wiring to 2 guage, run a high output alternator, and a year old DieHard battery that checks out fine when I test it with the meter at work.

Sometimes when I go to start it it turns over VERY slowly, sometimes it turns over like it always has, and more recently, it dosen't turn over at all. It dosen't matter if the engine is hot, or if it has sat all night and cooled off, so I doubt it could be heat soak. If you can get it started, you can shut it off, and it dosen't start again a few seconds later. I don't notice any "click" like you would if the battery were low, and I have tried it in neutral as well as park in case the NSS it the problem (although I doubt it would start at all if this were the case).

I hate to just start throwing parts at it, but I haven't been out in it in over a month, and I'm starting to miss the stares you get when you attempt to park your spooled Heep next to someone's new car at the mall. Thanks, Bryan

Yeah, try tapping on it with a hammer or somthing, you might be able to get it to start a few more times to get it somewhere to work on it.

Well, getting it somewhere to work on it consists of pushing it into the garage with the tractor, so that isn't really a concern. I feel it's probably the starter as well, but I wanted to see what some other people had to say. Any preference on what kind of starter to replace it with? I don't intend to carry a spare starter around with me on the trail, so I want something reliable. Any opinions on the Mean Green starter? I searched and found that a couple people are running one, but nobody seems to have shared how they hold up after a couple years of abuse.

FWIW I just took my starter off and apart and cleaned everything I could with wd 40 or equivelant. put it all back together and it has worked fine ever since.
