I purchased my 1999 Cherokee back in August 08 and even since ive had it it makes this weird sound. It sounds like someone is brewing coffee behind my radio and AC controls. This doesnt always happen. It only happens when the car is in drive and I have my foot on the brake at a complete stop. This doesnt happen in neutral. And as I get moving it slowly goes away. I have no idea what it is an I'm wondering if anyone has ever encountered this problem. I want to make sure this is nothing serious and how to fix it. All input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Betcha you've got air in your coolant system, and that sound is the water gurgling through your heater core. I had a Subaru that made the exact same noise. Try parking on an uphill incline and run the engine with the radiator cap off (obviously you want the engine to be cool before you start this exercise). Hopefully the bubble will work its way into the radiator and you can top off with coolant.

I've got the same thing. I've had my '00 since last sept, and my girlfriend hates the rattle. I just assumed its something loose in the dash vibrating with the engine especially since it's a rebuilt jeep. But it only happens when I'm stopped in drive and hard on the brakes, if i let up until I'm barely pressing the brakes and still stopped it goes away. It's comforting to know that I'm not the only one!

Odd, my '00 does the same thing. Cant hear it under the hood, only from in the cab. The heater core air bubble theory is plausible.

I would doubt the air bubble theory unless the system has recently been worked on.

Later model xj with open cooling system are self-burping.

Could you be hearing the purge valve on the canister cycling?

Have a friend control the vehicle and use a vinyl tube, about 3' long, like a one-legged stethoscope to isolate the sound.
