SO what tranny?

I just want to double check something.... What tranny do i have? its an '88 chokee w/auto and 4.0. Someone told me it was a 231? but i thought it was the 999...help? :doh:

all i have seen on xj's rfom 87 to present is 231 and 242. i dont think they used the 242 until about 1990

Your transmission is an AW-4, your transfer case will either be an NP231 (Command-Trac, part-time, 2H-4H-N-4L) or an NP242 (Selec-Trac, fulltime 4wd, 2H-4part-4full-N-4L)

Is there such thing as a 231 or 999 tranny?? or am i just seriously confused?

The only 231 I can think of right now is the NP231; however there's a TF (TorqueFlite) 999 tranny - medium duty 3 speed automatic used in CJs from 1980-1986. It was also used in 1984-1990 SJs and J pickups with the 4.2L engine, in the YJ from 1987-1991 with the 2.5L and 4.2L engine, and in the XJ in 1991 with the 2.5L engine.
