Smart Phones.....

So I dropped my Treo 270 off a balcony at the mall today, maybe 30+feet. It didn't survive. So, What are my options????
I like the palm "productivity" and desire one device, and not a Palm and a separate phone. I'm currently syncing with home PC and work PC. Anyone with any info/experience with the current crop of smart phones? I'm used to the Palm Desktop software, been using for probably better than 5 years. But I'm not set on it, if I can find an equally productive combo device. I don't do mobile email, or mobile web surfing.
I looked into the Treo 650 for a brief time today. Apparently, all Circuit City carries is Verizon phones, and they are not compatible with Tmobile? Oh yeh, I've got a Tmobile family plan, and would like to keep it that way! The Verizon Treo 650 is not compatible with Tmobile??? And if I buy a 650 outright without new service, it's likely to cost me $500!! I'd like a cheaper option! and I'm not even sure I can still get a 650 that will work with Tmobile.
Any help and suggestions would be appreciated! ASAP! I'm lost without my second brain! :rattle:

Sounds like you really need one of these. They are really handy and reliable and I think one of those would also have a pretty high chance of survival when dropped.

I got an old motorola like that when I couldn't get reception in my apartment a few years ago. - they were designed when cell towers were much farther apart- gets great reception just about everywhere. I keep it in the jeep, and no more dead spots.-

Yup, they had a higher power output. Those things worked almost anywhere and in a pinch could be used as a hammer :D

Are you under a new contract with T-Mo? If not, you may be in luck.

If you're out of contract or the current one is 11 months old, T-Mo gives discounted phone upgrades if you re-sign for another year.
If you're on a fresh contract, try the classifieds at howardforums.com - that place is a NAXJA for phone geeks.

We've been with Tmobile/voicestream/whoever forever, and have a current family plan with 2 phones (minus my dead one). Unfortunately, all Tmobile can offer me, is to buy a 650 on my own, and they could make it work with my current plan. That is a $599 option on PalmOne.com I'd rather not spend 6 large if at all possible! Cingular has a "refurbished" 650 for $140, but with 2 year contract, at $40/month.....adds up to $480 a year, and nolonger saving me anything. To buy outright from cingular is $550. Hmmm. I think I'm SOL.

Hey, Thanks! There is alot to read there. Apparently you did not like the 650. If I didn't want internet connectivity, or even email access, but the Personal/business management applications, do you think I'd be happy with one, if I could find it for something less than 6 large?? I've had Palm OS for probably 6 years or so, and have been very happy with it, and the Palm Desktop. Although I'm considering a switch to Outlook (that's what's used at work). I really don't want to have to keep track of a phone and a palm. Any quick suggestions? If I'm spending $600 I'll also consider smart phone applications, or even those windows palm top thingies.....

By the looks of this Palm OS switching to Windows Mobile??
maybe I should just bypass the Palm OS altogether? Any suggestions for Windows Mobile based phones with a built in keyboard??
Is that Sidekick thing from Tmobile even worth considering??

You could sign a new contract with T-Mo, getting their most expensive MSRP (but cheapest to you) phone and then unlock it and sell it on ebay to recoup some of your costs for a Treo.

What about this thing? i would be using this if I was still on Cingular. You might be able to pick one up "unlocked" and then use it with your t-mobile account. If you pay full price at a Cingular store they are required to send you a unlock code. This code will unlock the phone and allow you to use it with any GSM/SIM card based service.

WindowsMobile Rocks! Palm IS going away. The new Treo 750(?) will run in Windows Mobile.

Here are some Windows Mobile links I run around too:

Hey Guys, Thanks for all the input. I really appreciate it. I was kinda freakin out there, without my back up brain, and phone! Well, seems I can't afford the current crop of Windows Mobile devices, and not likely the Treo 700 when it arrives. I also couldn't justify 5-600 for a Treo 650. After much searching, and talking, I found a Treo 650 for $140, Refurbished, on the Cingular web site! For my use, that will likely keep me going for another couple years.
Thanks again!

When my 16 year old son wanted a cell phone last year I brought one of those home from work. :D
